Summary:
Feature Request: Comment link in crosspost footer
Original Request:
When crossposting with comments turned off on the remote site, a nice footer is created which reads, "This entry was originally posted at URL. Please comment there using OpenID."
It would be really nice if this footer could be made to contain a direct link to URL?mode=reply, duplicating the functionality of the "Leave a comment" link after every entry in a reading list. If no additional text is desirable, the link could be affixed to the word "comment" in the second sentence.
This would remove the extra click burden for people reading at the remote site who wish to leave a comment without checking for/reading current comments first.
This extra click interferes with people's willingness to comment, and even to read the crossposted journals of Dreamwidth users who take advantage of the feature to crosspost with comments turned off. Removing it would thus ease migration to Dreamwidth and use of features which reduce fracturing of the community.
Diagnostics: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.7) Gecko/2009031314 Gentoo Firefox/3.0.7

Dear Magus,
The reason that we chose to have it link to the read-comments page, rather than to ?mode=reply, is because at the moment there's no way to tell how many comments an entry has on Dreamwidth from the remote site. Linking directly to the read comments page at least gives people an idea of how active the discussion is at the time they load the page.
We do plan on both adding a way to make people viewing a crossposted entry on another service able to see how many comments are on the entry on Dreamwidth, as well as adding a way to let people change the text (and which version of the page is linked to) in the future.
Best,
Denise

Denise,
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I understand that; it's definitely important for the primary link to be to the full set of comments so people can see the entire discussion.
The idea of having the crossposted entry show the total number of comments is really exciting, and I look forward to seeing how you accomplish that.
In the meantime, I'm still not clear why you won't link to *both* the read comments page [as the big primary link people are most likely to use] *and* to ?mode=reply [in a smaller link] for the kind of people who go directly to "leave a comment" from their reading page.
At the very least, will there be a straightforward way of linking to both once the ability to edit the footer text is added?

Hi marcmagus,
There are several reasons Dreamwidth chose not to link to both the main page and the ?mode=reply page in the crossposting linkbacks. One is due to how much entry real estate the links would take up. Another is because having two links instead of one may prove confusing to the end user. It is possible to reach the ?mode=reply page with just one extra click and the crossposter designers felt that the extra click was a sufficient trade-off in the name of usability.
Usability is one of the primary goals of Dreamwidth. I've linked you to the FAQ which describes the other important goals of Dreamwidth, in case you are interested.
As to your other query, I would like to suggest that you visit dw_suggestions and leave it in the comments on the entry there. It is a very good suggestion, and so that is the best place for it.
Thank you for using Dreamwidth!
Best,
Kat
