About Us: Open Source

We're strong believers in the Open Source movement and the ideals of free software and the Creative Commons. That which we create together is bigger than the sum of what we could create independently.

Dreamwidth Studios is based primarily on the Open Source LiveJournal code provided by LiveJournal.com, and we're grateful to them for giving their code an Open Source license. We've forked their code and are in the process of adding extra features and fixing bugs.

We're committed to making as much of our software as possible available under an Open Source license. We look forward to seeing other people using our code and hope to be able to incorporate changes they make into Dreamwidth.

There will be a few instances where we won't be releasing our code; one is that we're keeping the code for our default site skin (the look and feel of the site) closed-source so it's unique to us. However, we want these exceptions to be few and far between and will provide our reasoning in all cases.

We've also extended the ideal of Open Source to include our documentation. All our FAQs and guides are released under a Creative Commons license.
