November World Travel
Who: Anyone and everyone
When: Nov. 9 and onward
Where: Kaittos
What: A new path opens up
[While the Trials themselves are intended to be logged here, an update will offer more information on the Awakening experienced by the successful. This will come out on November 23rd! For questions, please head to the recent mod update.]
When: Nov. 9 and onward
Where: Kaittos
What: A new path opens up
Without warning, the silvery light that appeared to bring new people from other worlds and old items from home appears once more, and this time it lingers, forming portals as tall as an average human near each of the three Ingress shrines. The location does not appear to be a coincidence; this time, the portals are translucent, revealing the destination on the other side. Instead of taking Avagi's residents to the future, it will take them to another world. If they step through the portal, travelers will find something far different from where they've been living this last month: Kaittos, a peaceful world containing one large land mass and a scattering of lived-on islands across a clear blue ocean. On the mainland, a large city-state occupies the central region and southern coast and resembles what some travelers from some versions of Earth might know of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. ![]() Bustling and lively, the city is clean and well provided-for due to the temperate climate and the bountiful natural resources found on its northern side; orchards, farms and forests extend into the distance, butting up against a small mountain range. The technology level is low compared to Avagi, with carriages and candles in place rather than cars and electric lights, but the craftsmen of the world have managed some very impressive mechanical feats. Kaittans, the local residents of the world appear somewhat humanoid, but the bipedal race has hooves rather than feet, silvery skin and three eyes with vertical pupils. Although there is no sign of any other sentient species in the world, the locals are nonetheless excited to meet their guests, rather than suspicious or afraid; for some reason, they are not surprised that aliens exist, merely that they are here. In the weeks to come, the stabilized portals will provide a respite from the more confined lifestyle aboard Avagi. Travelers are warmly welcomed and encouraged to explore the land. Some things they'll find include...

ᴀ) ᴛʜᴇ ʟɪᴛᴛʟᴇ ᴍᴀsᴛᴇʀ ᴏꜰ ᴅɪsᴇᴀsᴇs: ᴛʀᴀᴅɪɴɢ
(It does not take Eddie a long time to realize that information = currency. It was an easier currency to understand than Canadian money, and a currency Eddie liked to think that he had plenty of. The world itself had been jaw-dropping to Eddie the moment he decided to explore. It was cleaner and far more beautiful than any other place he had ever seen in his entire, young life. He had been completely submerged, walking through the crowds, narrowly avoiding the adults rushing about here and there. And he watched. He watched a lot, watched the way people talked, saw some of the goods and resources being traded off, his eyes wide with want. He barely had anything back on the station and even Eddie understood that that had to change.
The moment he picks up on the knowledge thing? Eddie goes on a personal quest for cleaning supplies. Both for his body and otherwise. He also takes a look at unique looking articles of clothing, some things that looked like this world's version of games for kids, and really, anything else that caught his eye.
Eddie can be seen talking to a number of Kaittans, sitting cross legged in front of scholars, his hands animatedly moving as he describes a variety of earthly diseases that he knows about. One might catch the tail end of one of Eddie's long explanations of some uncomfortable, unpleasant disease:)
...Athlete's foot is disgusting and super contagious. It's this gross fungus, and you can get it by using public showers without wearing shoes....
...Syphilis is what you can get if you do it with a girl- or a guy I guess if you're like that, and you die! I think it's when....
...You want to get a tentanus shot because if you don't and you touch rusted metal your jaw will lock shut then you'll never be able to eat again and- and you'll definitely die. My mom says that that's why I shouldn't play in old houses but like, our house is old so I don't really know how credible that is...
ʙ) ʙʀɪɴɢ ᴛʜᴇ ʜᴇʀᴏᴇs ꜰʟᴏᴡᴇʀs: ᴛʀɪᴀʟ ᴏꜰ ʜᴇᴀʟɪɴɢ
(The temples had caught his eye when he first showed up on Kaittos but it had taken him some time to get there. He didn't accidentally wind up at the Trial of Life temple or the Trial of Communication. No. His feet carried him almost instinctively to the Trial of Healing temple. For the first time in his twelve years of life, Eddie realized what it felt like to actually be calm. He stopped abruptly inside the temple and just watched the people move around him. Even when he tried to remember why he felt so tense all of the time, nothing seemed Big Enough to really jar him. He knew he wasn't sick and that was okay. He didn't need his inhaler. He couldn't remember his summer either and so that wasn't there to float at the back of his mind like a round, ominous balloon. Eddie Kaspbrak was just...
At peace.
He let himself have this moment. Let himself sit down with his small legs curled into his chest and watched, watch the world spin around him. Didn't feel nervous by the sight of adults, didn't even feel squeamish as heroes from the Trial of Life were patched up. As a matter of fact, as he sat there, he began to feel very strongly about wanting to help. At first, Eddie didn't think getting in the way of medical professionals would be a good idea. So he didn't. But he did remember the one thing he always looked forward into the gray, harsh atmosphere of hospitals: flowers. And his fake allergies be damned, he felt pretty determined all of a sudden. He wanted to be useful.
And there sure were a lot of flowers in this city. Eddie gets to work.
He trades one of his artisan soaps for a woven basket to attach to the front of his bike. After that, he cruises through the world and finds perfect flowers. He doesn't know if he's allowed to pick them, but that doesn't stop him from collecting a thick bouquet in his basket. When he returns to the Temple of Healing, Eddie sets his bike up out of the way in a corner and begins to dart around with his flowers, offering them to the really rough looking people, or the people who just kind of looked like they could use it.
So maybe, if you could use it, you'll have Eddie approaching, holding out a single flower with a shy sort of smile and something along the lines of:)
I know this isn't really medicine, but it might help.
ᴄ) ᴡʜᴇɴ ᴇxᴘʟᴏʀɪɴɢ ʜᴀᴘᴘᴇɴs ᴇᴠᴇʀʏᴡʜᴇʀᴇ: ᴄʜᴏᴏsᴇ ʏᴏᴜʀ ᴏᴡɴ ᴀᴅᴠᴇɴᴛᴜʀᴇ.
(Eddie will be biking about getting his flowers for the Trial of Healing or looking for things to do/ to eat/ dancing to some of the music/ generally being a kid and getting into light trouble or just having fun so he'll be literally everywhere and anywhere if anyone's interested in something not listed. The only places he won't be is at the Trial of Life and probably the Trial of Communications.)
i'm so sorry?? but also trading
[He's talking about something related to disease. Quite the little hypochondriac, is he not?]
[By the time he gets to tetanus, Chara more or less bursts out laughing.]
Your jaw will lock? [They sound positively giddy with delighted disbelief, like this is all some tremendous joke. Honestly, they don't even care if they're interrupting. It's worth it.] Did your mother teach you nothing other than exaggerated stories about death and dying?
no really i was going to respond to your top level i'm ready for it
And to response to that mother question?)
No.
(Because she honestly didn't. Well, she did, but they were all lessons that were pretty much in the same vein of keeping Eddie a healthy, good boy in extreme situations. Advice that leveled out to don't play with those dirty children, Eddie! and You can't leave me, I'm your mother, Eddie!.
And then:)
It's not an exaggerated story. Lockjaw is real and it can effect a lot of people. It's not my fault you're too stupid to know that.
omg g o o d
[They're still smiling. They've not forgotten his complete silence in response to their quite frank assessment of the dangers of the world of Thisavrou. Perhaps they'll not be as variegated here, but where's the fun in pretending that there won't be a fair assortment of danger? From what they understand, there is at least one trial by brute force combat to be had.]
If I told you that the air here was violently toxic and that you only had thirty minutes to continue breathing it before you seized up and died, would you believe me?

trading; i hope this poor kid still has his armor
The sun still shined here.
The birds still sang.
And--]
Eddie? [He squints, weaving through a few of the much taller Kaittos inhabitants.] That you, kid?
[He wasn't quite sure what he was hearing, but whatever it was, that voice was too familiar to ignore.]
bless his soul- he carries it with him everywhere.
(Eddie is talking at his rabbit-quick pace, one finger raised as he begins the great subject of Cancer. With a capital C. But as he begins to orchestrate the warning symptoms, he hears his name through the comfortable murmur of the crowd with its bells and music and liveliness.
He turns his head away from the younger scholar in front of him, rapidly jotting down notes, and Eddie's eyes widen. His mouth turns into an immediate smile.)
Sans?
(He whips his head back around with a I'm sorry- that's my friend, I have to go.
At least he gets a small block of soap (or something enough like it) that smells like sort-of sandalwood for his trouble. That gets pocketed and he's practically jogging over to Sans.)
Hi! Can you believe this place?
no subject
Thought I heard you bumming around here. S'pretty cool, right? [To say the least. Certainly an improvement on a cramped, leaky space station. He spotted the sponge before Eddie made his way over, and Sans points to the pocket with a raised brow bone.] Doing some trading?

Eddie is, on the apparently, a fountain of information about health things that she's never once concerned herself with.]
Actually I've been stabbed with plenty of rusted metal and I can still eat pastries like I haven't eaten in months. Which leads into the fact that I'm definitely still alive.

(He all but jumps to his feet, shock coloring his face almost white.)
You've been stabbed by rusted metal?! (Don't mind his shrieking, he does that...a lot...But she has a point. She still is alive.
Still. That doesn't stop Eddie from planting his hands on his hips and giving her a very stern look, almost like he was the adult here.)
Just because you didn't die doesn't mean you weren't in danger! You should be more careful, Hawke. There's a lot of bacteria in the world and you might not get so lucky next time. Please tell me you at least sanitized the wound?

She raises a hand toward him in greeting.] Hey, Eddie! [She smiles at him, and waits to see if he'll slow down, or just keep going.]
I don't even care they still cute af
He's aware of his surroundings though. Eddie was too paranoid about getting hurt, more so because of not wanting his mom to flip, that he never drove around recklessly.
So he sees Rogue, and he instantly grins. He rises up in his seat and sails over to her, only sitting back down when he was close enough. He puts on his breaks, skidding his bike to a halt just in front of her.)
Rogue! Hi. (He's a little breathless from the ride, but it's a good breathless.)

trial of healing!
So when he's spoken to, he blinks at Eddie's words, surprised, and a hand stretches out to take the flower from him.]
I-- [Something in his face softens, and he smiles. His hand is gentle when he receives it.] Thank you.
[While he may not realize it, Eddie's action reminds Siegfried of his life back home, back when he was always referred as a hero, and children would be happy to see him. There's a brief moment where he huffs out something like laughter, and then it's gone.
Eddie may notice Siegfried wears armor, and that he's also really tall, but perhaps the most striking part about him is the glowing sigil running from his cheek all the way down his chest. He doesn't seem bothered by it- in fact, it doesn't even look like he notices.
There's a quiet tilt of his head as he looks at Eddie now, smile still present.] Have you been doing this for a while?
no subject
However. Maybe it was the Trial of Healing itself soothing out Eddie's normal anxieties and reservations of adults. Maybe it had to do with his perspective of soldiers in general, a kid raised right after WWII where patriotism was advertised everywhere. Soldiers were 'good people', as far as he knew. The armor itself might be foreign and strange to Eddie, but he understands it enough to know what it probably means. Either way? Eddie didn't feel scared of this man- even knowing he could snap Eddie in half if he really wanted to.
He hands over the flower with certainty, and when the man's face softens, Eddie feels even further secure in his choice of handing out flowers. People just liked them. Especially people healing.)
You're welcome.
(He folds his arms behind his back, rocking back and forth on his heels. Eddie looks rather pleased with himself then. He realized that he could be useful and that he liked being useful. Even if it was something so small.
His eyes do linger on the strange glow, but by now, he's aware that there's plenty of strange people here. Nonhumans and otherwise. If anything, it reminds him of all the comic book characters he likes and he thinks 'cool' before anything else.
The question makes Eddie blink, and then he nods, looking over his shoulder. His red bike was set off in a corner of the room, basket half-full of flowers. Eddie swings his head back around to look at Siegfried.)
Yup. I know some medical stuff, but adults don't like kids getting in the way like that. So I figured I'd do something for people waiting around while they rested. I hate resting in hospitals. It's boring. (He leans forward, brows raised.) Did you fight in the Trial of Life?

healing
[The sight of a kid sitting by themselves gets his attention. So he hunkers down, recognizing the kid after a moment.]
Hey. You okay?
no subject
Eddie smiles, squeezing his knees closer to his chest.)
Yeah, actually. I really like this place.
(He takes in a deep, deep breath.)
I feel like it's easier to breathe here. And everything's more quiet.
(He feels like he can't hear his mom screaming as much about what he could die of. Even though he doesn't have asthma, the feeling of it replicated through his anxiety has dwindled to practically nothing. He means it's more quiet inside of him, not in the temple, but it's a good thing. It's a really, really good thing.)
Are you okay? (Because that seems like a fair question to ask. Shiro was a big man and while he didn't seem injured, Eddie saw lots of adults walk through this place who had come from the Trial of Life. So he figures he should ask. Just in case.)

On a... thing. Every time he thinks he's got a handle on future technology, something catches him by surprise. He has never seen a bike before in his life.]
Ah, do you need any help? [Where are your parents. Also what is that thing you are sitting on.]
100% okay!
He looks up in surprise when he's suddenly addressed and rocks back onto his seat. His eyes linger a moment too long on the - person's face. The ears. Eddie was still very much getting used to...nonhumans, though he liked to think he was a lot better about it now than he had been even a couple days ago.)

It becomes even more charming when he approaches her with a flower. Smiling, she takes it from him and brings it in close enough to sniff.]
Oh, I don't need medicine anyway. It's perfect, Eddie. Thank you.
[It dawns on her then that he might be completing one of the other trials. Her eyes glance up from the flower to him.]
Are you just here visiting?
no subject
But Clara had none of that. She was soft and pretty like some of the kind women in his town, she didn't make him feel like a moron every time he spoke, and she certainly wasn't covered in rugged scars. Least none that Eddie could see.
So it was pretty surprising to see her waiting around with the others. How could he not offer her a flower? His expression is a bit confused though, even as he holds it out.)
You don't? Did you fight in the Trial of Life? (He asks and it's clear that there's a bigger question there: how did she fight in the Trial of Life?
Eddie shrugs.)
I like it here. I was sitting around for a while when I realized I should probably help out. I felt kinda bad since there were injured people bringing in. But um. This place is really calming?

In case you weren't entirely tired of A....
It would make him nostalgic if it didn’t make him so damn nervous.
Not that this planet had much of a dangerous scent to it, but they’d been fooled by that sense of security more than once before. Still, he lingers just a little longer near Eddie, listening carefully and watching reactions of the Kaittans he was regaling with...a particularly interesting flavor of knowledge. They were also listening, some of them fairly enraptured by his animated monologue, some of them creeping into silent looks of repulsion. Ratchet found his own nose wrinkling at some of the colorful descriptors.]
Kid, I think they wanted to trade culture not horror stories.
[
Horror stories are culture, Ratchet.]Never tired of Eddie being obsessive about health
This thing talking to him was not humanish at all. It isn't to say that Eddie was automatically scared though. But he does stare in a way that bordered on being rude, like he was marveling over some kind of animal instead of a more sentient being. You know, one with conscious thoughts and feelings.
So Ratchet doesn't even have to talk much to get Eddie's attention because Eddie's never talked to an animal before and as far as he's concerned? That's basically what Ratchet is. Cute, furry, big-eyed, big-eared animal.
Ratchet's intentions were good. And smart. Eddie was a regular old fashioned human being kid with no special powers or anything at all. He could be killed just like that. It was a miracle he hadn't yet. But of course, they were intentions Eddie was crisply oblivious too as he gaped at this- thing.
Did it just call him kid?)
What are you?
(Eddie doesn't sound disgusted or anything. He just sounds floored. Let him get over his initial shock and he'll address the culture thing in a moment.
Sorry, Ratchet, you're probably far too used to this kind of bullshit already. But a kid's wide-eyed wonder and all that.)

She hits the market place, already having managed to trade for some luxuries like new hair brush and lotions. She's currently looking at new silky scarf when she hears an excited but high pitched voice listing down some of the nastiest stuff she's heard in a while.]
Oh dear. Can't you come up with anything more positive than that?
I am so sorry
This woman was not. Straight off the bat, Eddie felt that knee-jerk intimidation of WOMAN because of how much she was. He's never seen someone dressed up like that in person, man or woman. It's enough to make him snap his mouth shut from rattling on any more and give her this massive eyed stare.
Eddie doesn't say a single thing for a solid, literal minute, then he seems to remember himself. But not enough to really process what he's saying because he clumsily blurts:)

Laura might have hit a bit of a blip though with Eddie. He wasn't just gentle, after all, he was abnormally gentle for even a human child. Sensitive to a fault, arguably.
He would argue viciously that he does still need her. He had more friends, sure, but a lot of them were still grown-ups. They didn't play with him like she did. He needs her the way he needs his old friends.
It startles him only a tiny bit when she suddenly appears next to him. He's gotten better about jumping though and only blinks a handful of times, his breathing a little more thin.)
