November World Travel
Who: Anyone and everyone
When: Nov. 9 and onward
Where: Kaittos
What: A new path opens up
[While the Trials themselves are intended to be logged here, an update will offer more information on the Awakening experienced by the successful. This will come out on November 23rd! For questions, please head to the recent mod update.]
When: Nov. 9 and onward
Where: Kaittos
What: A new path opens up
Without warning, the silvery light that appeared to bring new people from other worlds and old items from home appears once more, and this time it lingers, forming portals as tall as an average human near each of the three Ingress shrines. The location does not appear to be a coincidence; this time, the portals are translucent, revealing the destination on the other side. Instead of taking Avagi's residents to the future, it will take them to another world. If they step through the portal, travelers will find something far different from where they've been living this last month: Kaittos, a peaceful world containing one large land mass and a scattering of lived-on islands across a clear blue ocean. On the mainland, a large city-state occupies the central region and southern coast and resembles what some travelers from some versions of Earth might know of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. ![]() Bustling and lively, the city is clean and well provided-for due to the temperate climate and the bountiful natural resources found on its northern side; orchards, farms and forests extend into the distance, butting up against a small mountain range. The technology level is low compared to Avagi, with carriages and candles in place rather than cars and electric lights, but the craftsmen of the world have managed some very impressive mechanical feats. Kaittans, the local residents of the world appear somewhat humanoid, but the bipedal race has hooves rather than feet, silvery skin and three eyes with vertical pupils. Although there is no sign of any other sentient species in the world, the locals are nonetheless excited to meet their guests, rather than suspicious or afraid; for some reason, they are not surprised that aliens exist, merely that they are here. In the weeks to come, the stabilized portals will provide a respite from the more confined lifestyle aboard Avagi. Travelers are warmly welcomed and encouraged to explore the land. Some things they'll find include...

Cayde-6 // OPEN
It had begun as simply wanting to pick up on an old habit. When words failed him for the moment, the Exo had decided to fall back upon the visual, sketching out lines of portions of scenery before him where he sat off to the side of one of the numerous cascades of stone steps in the city that seemed like a snapshot from some lost civilization. With the stub of pencil he had, Cayde drew out distinguishable shapes of the local architecture, the spillage of greenery and flora that decorated just about every suitable corner, scattered across an aged scrap of paper.
Some time later might find him wandering the streets, soaking in what equates daily life for these people who genuinely seemed to have peace. It's a strange thing, both calming and inspiring, but there's also this tiny bit of awkwardness that he otherwise does a good job of hiding. Someone who's kind has been designated as living weapons and war machines seems to have no place here.
To be fair, he'd been eager to pop through those portals with expectations of finding something valuable to stash, to fall back upon some old practices. And while he's found nothing that he'd classify as the usual loot or treasure, Cayde can't say that he's completely disappointed.
.cultural exchange
"Here you go," Cayde says, offering a couple of what appear to be sketches to one of the locals manning a stall that seems more for display than selling wares. "I'll admit, I'm out of practice..." It seems he's drawn out a quick portrait in charcoal of the Kaittan native, simple line work with solid shading. The other image doesn't look like anything seen here in this world, some kind of moon-like body suspended over the abstract shadows of a cityscape. Or it could be a giant eyeball. For a robot, he doesn't seem to have a bad hand, no matter what he claims.
Folding his arms, he waits expectantly for the verdict, optics brightening as he's handed a small, handbound book. He picks it up and flips through what are apparently blank pages before nodding. "Pleasure doing business," he says with a salute as he turns.
.cayde-6 and the temple
of doomTo be honest, he has no idea what to expect of this Great Awakening thing. There is no denying his curiosity, however. It doesn't take him long to figure out which of the temple trials sounded the most attractive to him, and perhaps he's still holding out on some kind of treasure to make out of this place with, which is only part of the reason he's even considering to tackle the Trial of Life. The rest is purely out of restlessness.
"Only what can be carried in two hands, eh...." he muses, fingering the handle of the knife sheathed at his left.
Temple of Doom hell yes
shoot shitstretch his legs."Only in two hands, / I'm at a disadvantage. / That hardly seems fair."
He sounds like he's joking, but he is looking down at his hands. They're a bit on the narrow side on account of the whole four fingers thing, but he totally thinks he could carry like, his pistol and sword in one hand and his sniper rifle in the other. Or hell, what if they just toss a bunch of shit in a bag? You only need one hand to carry a bag. That's probably not the case at all and Zer0 might have to ditch one of his guns or something or... well shit who knows.
"...the rule's a little vague."
no subject
"Yeah, it is kinda vague. And very unfair. I mean, what if you're a giant space rhino and can carry several people's weapons worth?" He taps a finger against his metal chin before raising a finger. "-ooh, and what if you had collapsible weapons? Or shrinking weapons?"
no subject
And let's be realZer0 fully plans on exploiting the shit out of it. He figures once they get into the place he can stow his stuff properly, but he is totally seeing if he can actually hold two guns and a sword in his hands at the same time. Which he totally can, but he pauses after a second and turns to Cayde again.
"Food and medical supplies might be a good idea."
no subject
Guardians tend to carry a fair arsenal with them, conveniently stowed by way of matter transportation. Aside from his hand cannon, he's got a couple of rifles, and is leaning towards the opinion of 'what they don't know won't hurt 'em.' He also wonders if they'd consider his Ghost a separate party member, in which case, for its obvious lack of hands, if they would be willing to compromise.
Cayde pauses as Zer0 brings up other essentials, however. ".....oh. Right. Five days in there, huh..." It seems obvious he'd completely overlooked that part. "Well, at least we can probably cut that down to just whatever you need. My Ghost can heal me, and I've gone longer without a snack. ...we gotta balance that in two hands though...?"
no subject
Zer0's not actually all that concerned, he probably doesn't even need to eat anyway. We just don't know. So, he just gives Cayde a little shrug. Food and first aid kits? PSSHHH.
"A trial like this / Sounds simple when it's compared / To the things I've faced."
no subject
Regardless, Cayde doesn't seem overly concerned about extra provisions either, and with Zer0 shrugging, he almost seems to grin.
They are going to be an awesome team guys"Heh, right? Survival in some unknown space with possible threats lurking? That's a Guardian's day job right there."

CULTURE
Please excuse the immense amount of skepticism from the turian woman looming at the edges of your stall, Cayde. Someone has to keep an eye on the guy. And it turns out, Vetra has decided she's the person to do so.
Apparently today, that means looking judgmentally at all his drawings.

"I can't help it if that's what the Traveler looks like."

She is teasing. She is completely and utterly teasing.

"Anyway, got what I wanted," he says as he lifts the journal, brushing it with a light smack of his hand. "Didn't have a picture of it so I drew 'em what I remember of the cityscape from the Tower, back home."
no subject
It's a promise. A sort of threatening one, but still. A promise.
She tilts her head, trying to get a better look at the journal. "What did you end up getting? Not Ghost, right?"
no subject
He flips the book open, ruffling through a few pages to show it's blank. "It's a journal. You know, to write in? Figured maybe I could get back into the habit."

Nice work. What'd you get?
[It doesn't register that this is the guy who shared a dream with kid-him. Yet.]
no subject
Hey there.
[Cayde glances at his newly acquired book.]
Journal. Hand-bound too. I figure it'd be better than writing in the margins of one of the books from the library.
no subject
[He wrote in the library books. He sometimes stole the library books. What a rebel.]
Can I see it? I'd like to check out the binding technique, see if it's more or less like types used back on Earth.
[LOOK AT THIS NERD RIGHT HERE.]
no subject
[He may or may not already have wrote a few things in a copy of Treasure Island that he'd found on Avagi, to continue a trend.]
Oh, sure.
[The Exo holds out the book to the guy.]
Thought it looked kinda similar but I'm no binding expert. Least it doesn't look like it'd go falling apart so easy.
no subject
[His attention is briefly diverted from conversation by examination of the book. He gives the spin a close look, then opens the cover, and then pulls out a pencil to do a quick sketch--crap. He doesn't have enough hands to hold two books and a pencil at the same time.]
Hold this for me for a minute? I'll get out of your hair quick. Not that you...have hair.

Eh, take your time. I'm not in any particular hurry.

Arrival!
How long as Nihlus been standing there? He seems properly settled, one step above Cayde, hands on his knees and standing pointedly out of the way of the Exo's sunlight.
"That's beautiful." Casting his gaze upwards, his green eyes slant in a lipless, alien smile. "Fancy seeing you around again. Cayde, right?"
no subject
"Don't really think I'm an artist. I just kinda dabble. I'd write but I don't think it'd do any justice. And they say pictures are worth a thousand words."
He finally glances back at the Turian, seeming to give a bit of a smirk himself if for the tilt of his head. "But thanks. It's been a while." And then he nods. "The one and only. Only inevitable considering our limited confines otherwise, but yeah, around here? Fancy that. How're you handling this vacation, Nihlus?"
no subject
And Cayde's writing was just fine, by Nihlus' standards. That, however, meant bringing up the note again and he wasn't entirely if that was a boundary that should be crossed at the moment. Far too personal for idle talk in a public space, either way.
"No vacation for me, friend." Laughing softly, he nods his head in the direction of the Trading Quarters. "I'm here to resource wrangle. There's a pack of kids to feed and and entire station to prepare for potential future attacks. It's been hellishly busy and I'm only stopping by for a breather."
no subject
It's the finding of such personal effects lately that have prompted him to start recording things again. Exo memory can be spotty, after all. He'd been surprised when his old writings had found its way back to him, more so upset at himself for forgetting such things than at them being found out.
"Ah, right. I guess this here's a good opportunity for finding stuff we can't on board the Avagi," he nods. "Buuuut it's nice to get a breather, change of scenery, you know?"
no subject
Just one second to stop for a bit. That's fine, wasn't it? There's so much on his plate right now: setting up the quarantines and saferooms, organizing seminars and meetings, gathering supplies, reverse engineering Life Support and Sanitation... Spirits.
One thing at a time.
Puffing, he leans back, elbows resting on the step behind him and long legs stretched out in front. For the first time since the portals opened, he stares out over the city and really sees it. The glow of it, the golden architecture speckled with colorful greenery, the stretch of a vast, glimmering blue sea beyond it.
"I can see why you chose this spot," he comments, casting the other a sideways glance and a smile.
no subject
Cayde sets his pencil down, glancing at Nihlus as he's joined on his step. "There's always going to be plenty to worry about. This here's the first proof that we're still somehow connected to the Ingress or something like it, and we can be thankful that it's somewhere tame and not exploding with things that might want to kill us."
He knows they wouldn't be all defenseless if that happened, and those who know him would know he'd love a good fight, but it's better if you're able to choose your battles, and not so much fun when you've got limited resources and everyone's still getting their feet under them.
"Nice, eh?" He grins back before turning his attention back towards the scenery beyond. "I know I'm sitting here in the middle of it but it's still kind of surreal."
