the outer gate
"Open up, and let them in."

The Moira is no more.

With the damage done to the ship due to the timeslip, all that remains is a burning wreckage and parts to be taken—if the crew can find anything in the pieces. Recovery and headcounts are the main objective for the first several hours of being planetside, and once things have settled just enough, Captain Ira calls for a meeting and addresses those who are able in person to explain the situation. He draws a rough map of the area and explains where he believes they are - according to the terrain - and where they must go. For anyone who’s listening, he describes things like an “Outer Gate”, an “Inner Gate” and “gate sectors”. Believing this to be the best course of action, all crew are asked to explore and gather what they think they’ll need to make the long journey towards the central point of the Hub. Because the MIDs are no longer working due to the lack of a network, the Captains distribute a newer tech called the TAB. It serves the same functions as the MID but is lighter, slimmer, and has the ability to stick to any surface.

WELCOME TO THE MIDWAY HUB

Now that the smoke from the crash has cleared, and injured crew have been tended to, the Captains get everyone ready for departure by explaining what they know of the Hub. Almost stone-like, the creators built a domed workspace in the largest solid space on the planet they could find. Gates are the only way inside, and anyone who catches a glimpse of the compound will see that parts of the dome are cracked. Yet, everything still appears to be relatively intact. The Midway Hub’s terrain is very rocky and difficult to walk on at times. Below the surface is a honeycomb of intermittently dense and brittle stone that makes travel difficult due to the unpredictable nature of what lies beneath the crew’s feet. Those who can develop the tech from what’s left of the debris might be able to create something to determine which route is the safest. Ships and small crafts can be used to fly, but landing is a problem—rocks jut up in sharp peaks and the clearer spots can't handle their weight. Vegetation is sparse, consisting of twisted dark gray thistles that have sprung up from cracks in the rock and burn when in direct contact with skin, and what could be considered small animals here can be seen scurrying away the closer crew get to them.

WEEK ONE
Crew are asked to hook cryo beds together and to use any appropriate vehicles that can be made or fashioned to fit the terrain to carry injured crew on the journey to the center of the Hub. Supplies are gathered, and the Captains, as well as any crew who want to, give the Moira a proper sendoff, heads bowed as they say goodbye to what’s been their home. Traveling starts out slowly, a line of a hundred-plus crew members making their way slowly forward. Stops are frequent, but camping for rest only occurs at night. Crew are assigned watch shifts, fires are built, injured tended to, and those who are able are asked to explore nearby caves and hunt for food.

Something akin to deer, though striped and only to be found in pairs, can be stumbled across at night. Throngs of dark purple mammels begin to follow the Moirans on their trip as well. They are friendly, curious, and eat the thistle. Meet the intelligent, watchful predators that aren’t easily scared away and follow the crew from a distance as if waiting to pounce. The thistle can be eaten, but only if cooked first, and those who sample the chewy plant raw will experience a burning sensation in their throat that doesn’t go away until the cooked version is consumed. During the first week, water can’t be found.

Anyone who does hunt, gather, or explore should make sure to that their TABS are on and it’s suggested that nobody goes alone.

Nearing the end of the first week, an Ingress can be spotted close by that crew can explore. If anyone dares to go inside, they will find the texture of the ground and surrounding walls to be rather soft. If inspected closely, crew will discover that what they originally thought to be rock is actually a living organism that’s fed off the energy of the Ingress it’s attached itself to. It’s not harmful and squishy to the touch. If pressed hard enough, it secretes a turquoise liquid with the consistency of water that might make a good substitute for that very thing.
WEEK TWO
When crew finally pass through the sector gates, a strange sensation encompasses them, and a depowering of sorts goes into effect. The creators put in security measures meant to put all visitors on equal footing as well as to protect themselves from harm. All crew will essentially have the strength and abilities of the average human. An unforeseen issue, this causes Captain Thán to slip into a coma as he is no longer able to continue to recover at a steady pace, and with the loss of the former Captain’s abilities, crew can no longer be brought back if they die. For the first time, all Moirans are subject to permanent death.

During this week of travel, broken ingress machines and parts will be found scattered among the rocks, and new crew will come through. Unfortunately, these Ingresses aren’t in good shape, and anyone coming through will be in varying states of distress—some physical and some mental. New individuals will either have suffered an age slip, growing older or younger than their original body, some form of body transformation (perhaps that shiny thing they were wearing is now part of them somehow), or an extreme weakness they had never been subjected to before arriving on the Midway Hub. The new people will be offered to join their group, once found, and seasoned crew will be asked to explain to them where they are going and what they know.

The rest of the week will be a mix of greeting the new arrivals and continuing to travel to the center of the Hub. The closer they get, the less frequently they’ll see animals, and more caves will begin to pop up.
WEEK THREE
Entering the third week of travel, settlements and houses begin to crop up and are prime areas for exploration and general supplies. Those who go inside may find items that have been left behind and evidence showing that those of varying species and cultures lived in the homes. Some appeared to have been scientists while others were explorers, but all living quarters are deserted. Crew who are less lucky in their search might come away with no fresh supplies, and others might walk into traps or safeguards left behind by previous tenants; these come in many forms, from mild paralysis to temporary unconsciousness. As there are more residences, there are also more caves. The entrances vary in size, and light sources will be needed to explore. Once inside, crew can find purple underwater streams, which can be consumed, and glowing surfaces. When crew drink the water, it temporarily restores powers, a few minutes tops, and then, extreme lethargy settles in for a couple of hours.

Further into the cave systems, crew will come across these lovely creatures that are attracted to sound and track through scent. They are highly dangerous and attack simply to feed. Killing them, though, is surprisingly simple as they are just as vulnerable and weak as everyone else. They are vicious in demeanor but only as strong as an average human.

The closer to the Inner Gate crew get, the less homes, wildlife, and more caves there will be.
WEEK FOUR
The Captains, aware that the crew is exhausted, stop and make camp for the first few days. Someone mentions that it’s the holidays where they’re from, and the Captains do their best to throw a party. Set up at the base of a cave, tents are built and fires roar. Soft music is played in the form of guitar, thank you Ira, and Cúrre brings out some legumes that taste like cherries when roasted. There isn’t much in the way of decorations, but crew are encouraged to dig through their pac-discs and contribute to the festivities.

After a brief respite, crew learn that the entrances to Gate A and Gate B are inside one of the caves but any signs or markings have long since worn away or been destroyed. Groups are split, TABS are synced, and crew explore carefully until an entrance is found. Crew discover Gate A first, and all crew are contacted to gather there. The Captains will remain at the cave entrance until all crew are accounted for, and then, they’ll enter through the gate together.

I. ( week 1 )
[ When Tony'd first found himself aboard the Moira, one of his first orders of business had been attempting to remove the MID from his wrist. A biometric, location-tracking, two-way communication device embedded on him at all times? Forget it.

He'd inevitably given that fight up as a futile once it became clear that no amount of ingenuity was getting the thing off, but now that the MIDs are no more and have an effective replacement, well - it's worth another try. His myriad tools were among the things he'd made sure to bring with him before the crash, naturally, so it's with nothing more than a few pocket tools that he finally manages to unlatch the device from his wrist for the first time in six months.

It's a momentary relief, and then - unexpectedly - a little bittersweet. Knowing there's nothing truly useful or salvageable in the little device, he tosses it onto one of the many fires roaring around the still-flaming wreckage of the Moira. He watches that fire for an uncharacteristically long, silent moment, before turning to whoever's nearby, should they still be sporting the MID bracelet themselves.

He waggles the tiny screwdriver, quirking an eyebrow. ]

Free handcuff removal, free of charge. Shipwreck discount.

II. ( week 1 )
[ Salvaging together tech that will help safely navigate them to the center of the Hub is exactly Tony Stark's calling, except for how a lack of materials, lighting, reliable electricity, and other essentials are all in short supply. Which isn't to say that he isn't trying, because he certainly is. He's made more with less.

The armor has an elaborate 3D GIS system already built into it, but secondary devices will be necessary with a group of this size. He remembers its construction (well... mostly, he might've been tipsy when he designed it) and can emulate it well enough with what he managed to either salvage from the shipwreck or bring with him originally, which is how he ends up with a small handheld-sized device that isn't remotely pretty, but seems to be doing its job. A foggy screen shows honeycomb of rocks of varying densities and compositions, combing with unforgiving and seemingly random elevation changes.

Here's the thing: he can't tell if this device is actually working or not, because that all seems fake as fuck.

He pinches the bridge of his nose in momentary exasperation and then looks up. ]

Hey, you. Do me a favor, you see that hole? [ He points, helpfully, at a large crag in the rocky ground ahead of them, probably a good eight feet deep. ] Go fall in it. It's for science.

[ #NAILEDIT ]

III. ( week 1 )
[ Hypothetically speaking, if you were an engineer who'd spent months trying to unravel the mysteries of the Ingress to catastrophic ends, and you were suddenly presented with one looming out of the barren landscape of the not-planet you're marooned on, what would you do?

Touch it. Obviously.

Tony's been armored up for much of the actual walking portion of this expedition so far, and the detour to the Ingress is no exception. For the first short while, he can be found perched near (or even atop, for others who can fly) the Ingress, muttering to himself (dictating notes to something, if you listen closely) and generally squeezing every last detail of information he can from it.

It's pretty much smooth sailing until he gets inside the thing, cutting his boot jets with what he expects to be a hard thump when his weight settles on the ground below. Except it's more of a moist, sucking, squelching sound.

Um. ]

... Ew.

[ The ground isn't supposed to do that. ]

IV. ( week 3 )
[ The only system on the armor that was unaffected by the de-powering was its flight capabilities, his small army's worth of bullets, lasers, and missiles having been rendered effectively useless for the time being. And even if that weren't the case, several weeks without a decent charge means the armor is desperately low on power anyway. Tony opts to save what's left of that power for any unforeseen emergencies.

Which means he's doing his reckless exploring without it. Will this go well?

Abso-fricken-lutely not.

He can be found exploring some of the various abandoned houses, going through people's stuff like he owns the place and hopefully not setting off any traps that will ruin the day for him and any poor sucker trapped in there with him.

If not the houses then it's the caves, flashlight, hunting knife, and gun in tow. He spends his time trying very hard to balance morbid scientific curiosity with practicality. Take, for example, the purple stream. He gestures at it, for the benefit of whoever's making this unwise cavedive with him. ]

I'm just saying, somebody's gotta stick their foot in it. Haven't you ever seen a movie? In your entire life?

[ Is he volunteering? No. Should somebody else? Yes. ]

[ Had Adrien been avoiding Tony? Maybe. Of course it could just be that the doctor was still avoiding everybody in general, so it was rather hard to get a good read on his intentions.

But while he had been avoiding people, the doctor had at least been paying attention to them in turn. His voice, when it came from somewhere behind the other man, was low key and dry. ]

This is as good as your suggestion that someone jump in a hole; for science.

[ Which was to say ... a bad suggestion. Stark, seriously.

Despite any misgivings the doctor may have, it didn't stop him from approaching the purple stream and hunkering down on his heels close to it. He had his makeshift bow slung over his shoulder, as well as a very battered old messenger bag, that he now carried everywhere with him. Courser was with him as well, though the bahari was sitting a safe distance away from the purple stream and looking down towards the shadows at the back of the cave.

Adrien dug into that battered bag and withdrew a piece of equipment. Balanced on his heels, he fiddled with the settings, brow furrowed pensively. ]

I know I read the manual on this thing, or maybe I just meant to read the manual on this thing.

[ Were they still aboard the Moira, it might've been easier to pinpoint the difference between Adrien being shifty and Adrien just being himself, what with how there was a reasonable semblance of routine to compare against. But here, now, Adrien is spared any more squinting than usual on the basis that everything is a mess, all the time. And everyone's busy, to put it lightly.

Tony glances over his shoulder at the interjection, giving Adrien an accusing look. ]

What? It was for science. And so is this. [ He glances back at the purple stream, rubbing at his chin thoughtfully. ] ... Well, mostly.

[ Morbid curiosity is at least half of it. Probably. Tony wanders closer when Adrien crouches down at the edge of the water, eyes drifting between the machine and the water. ]

I hope that's a convenient "tell us if this stuff'll liquefy your insides or not" probe.

No. Never in my entire life.

[Is a reply that's both flat and ernest. Hawke isn't exactly the wonderful ball of sunshine and cheer that she usually is. The loss of her magic is brutal. It's affecting the very core of her being. Something like being Tranquil but not quite so extreme. It's like her emotions were in a lockbox along with her sense of humor, leaving only an usual directness and logic, try as she might to find more. Sometimes other things escaped but she mostly felt dull. Even around people like Tony.

And back to the water. Hawke walks methodically up to the pool, drops to her knees, and sticks her hand in the purple liquid. It's pleasantly warm and yet makes her shiver a little like waking up from sleep.]

[ Tony tilts his head at her, clearly perturbed by the lack of witty retort. Hell, he can think of, like, seven different shitty things he'd have said in response to himself. If there's one thing Hawke always delivers on, it's this kind of thing.

And yet.

When she stoops down to shove her hand in the water - well, that part, at least, seems quintessentially Hawke. ]

[Darin had been doing some scouting when he found something that looked eerily familiar. Hurriedly, he makes his way to Ingress, pulling out his notebook in excitement. Was this the Ingress from the Moira? Did it land all the way out here?]

[No, this was somehow a different Ingress! He rushes into the cave and...]

[Unceremoniously trips, falling face first with a...splat?]

[That was definitely a splat.]

That assumption's as good as any, probably.

[ "An Ingress filled with a giant tongue" would not even be the weirdest thing Tony's seen around here.

Still, he's a good Samaritan - sometimes - so he stoops down to scruff Darin and peel him off the moist, deeply unnerving ground and thanks the high heavens that he's not wearing anything that can actually get wet. ]

[The MID was probably the most uncomfortable thing about life on the Moira. Venom rarely ever used his save for random announcements, so he was glad it stopped working. He trusted his magic com over this thing (and its replacement) any day. The thing would have been gone the moment it stopped working, if he knew anything about non-magic-based tech.

So as he's walking by, he notices Tony and what he's offering.]

[ Tony is probably the first one to actually see the three kids that Elena and Nate have adopted. They tend to stick close to her rather than Nathan in spite of her insisting to them that they can trust him if and whenever she's not around. Maybe it had something to do with her having more maternal skills than Nate, he wasn't exactly a mother hen type of guy.

With the MID now completely useless, she'd been unable to get in touch with anyone she'd made friends with. After he'd dumped Adrien off at Medbay and had gone off shortly afterwards, no contact could be established with the crash killing off all communicators. She'd been so busy with the Medtent to seek anyone out herself, pretty banged up herself, but hearing him now call out...it was a relief to hear his voice.

The three kids reached her waist, huddled close. She'd stopped to look for where he was calling from and then smiled as soon as he was spotted, herding the three with her.
]

Do you accept tips?

[ God she'd been wondering how to get the stupid thing off after emerging from her pod with the kids, screen cracked, the bracelet like a dead weight on her wrist. There hadn't been much time to clean up, blood dried and caked down her left arm from the bandage Nate had wrapped and secured, her right arm in a sling, side of her face a colorful splash of bruising and cuts.

And yet...she was smiling and pushing through the pain.
]

I'd wondered what had happened to you after you left me with the Doc. You all right?

[ Tony quirks an eyebrow at the assembled trio of kids clustered behind Elena. If he hadn't heard Nate speak of them several times previously, he might've found the spectacle downright perplexing. But as things are, seeing them seems more like "finally" than "what the fuck." ]

Depends. Do you tip in effusive praise and ego-stroking? [ But he's wandering closer anyway, pulling out the various tools he'll need for the little procedure. He moves slowly, lest the kids spook - he has no idea what their temperament is like normally, but they just lived through an honest-to-god shipwreck, so no surprises here if they're a little on edge. He tips a screwdriver in their direction, greeting them directly in the hopes of taking any edge off. ] And this must be Alvin and the Chipmunks. 'Sup, kids.

[ Then he's motioning for Elena to present her wrist, shrugging at the question. ]

Oh, just spent that afternoon murdering an army of monsters. Typical stuff. Barely noteworthy. [ He gives her a scrutinizing look through the curtain of flippant words. ] It sorta looks like I made it out in better shape than you did.

This is because of the beard thing, isn't it?

[lúcio just raises his eyebrows, shifting on his skates slightly.]

I know you're jealous of my slick future-tech but you don't have to try and get me to break it.

I don't forgive or forget.

[ Tony gives the little device in his hands a shake, then lifts an expectant eyebrow in Lucio's direction. ]

But, I mean, if you're not confident in their construction...

[The days following the crash had brought back far too many painful memories. Maybe she hadn't seen the crash that Steve "died" in, but being on the radio with him, losing him-- and now doing that all over again, plus the added bonus of losing the place had become almost home, and seeing so many friends hurt or gone--

Difficult didn't seem to cover it.

So she did what she always did when she didn't want to face her feelings: she kept busy. She assisted with the search and rescue, she helped with salvaging, she even helped with some minor first aid when she could. Anything so she didn't think.

Which is why she's still lingering by the crash site, and why she spots Tony when she does. It's been a while since she's spoken to him, and now definitely seems like a fitting time to check in.]

Mind setting me free? [She gestures to the useless device still on her wrist. It's been an annoyance since she arrived, and while she's gotten used to it over the last nine months, she won't complain to see it go.]
arcreact: & wants to bang you ps i'm my friend ((506) my friend thinks you're hot)

[ There's something about Peggy Carter that seems more-or-less invincible - at least, that's what it feels like whenever Tony spots her in the aftermath (or the midst) of one of these disasters, much to his relief. At least somebody around here is good at surviving, right?

He offers her a smile that borders on genuine more the cynical, which is novel enough right now. ]

You get the family discount, which exempts you from needing to sing my effusive praises as compensation. Lucky break.

[ Just in case Peggy doesn't already get enough Howard flashbacks. He gestures for her to hold out her wrist while he plucks out a series of tiny tools that look like they must be for extremely miniaturized circuitry, under normal circumstances.

He probably won't accidentally saw her wrist off. Probably. ]

[Maybe Tony doesn't see her well enough to know that it's her who is several feet away in the kinda-sorta-almost-dark. Or maybe that's just his opening line to her. So, she approaches slowly.]

I dunno, Stark, want me to push you in and we find out? [She starts with a teasing tone, the "threat" not much of an actual threat - might as well play it cool until she knows what he last remembers from home.]
arcreact: so i found myself puking in the middle of times square, in a three piece suit. a spongebob came by and patted my back ((914) hangover didn't kick in until 4pm)

[ It's true enough; without the armor and its infinitely convenient HUD display, his observational skills are reduced to, well. What they normally are. One eyebrow ratchets up the moment he hears the familiar voice, wheeling around to stare at her properly through the dim lighting.

Well, he'll be damned. ]

Y'know, suddenly, I'm actually not all that interested. [ He looks taken aback, a touch amused - all good signs, probably. ] I didn't realize this cave was full of deadly spiders, or might not've wandered into it alone.

☄ III. ( week 1 )

It's not poisonous.

[Kaz says as he hears the "ew", showing up just in time to witness this part of the investigation. He steps inside himself. And wincing behind his glasses as his now-bag-covered shoes squish down into the squelchy moist mass.]

Which doesn't mean its pleasant. I took some samples of the tissue just in case. Any idea of what's happening here?

[Who knows, maybe there's a part of the journals that's never been released? Or there's something reflecting changes to the Ingress prior to the crash? Or maybe all they know is "ew" and that a dog with a finicky palette decided she wanted to drink from it.]
arcreact: made me think of you (} (636) just set myself on fire a little)

[personal profile] arcreact 2016-12-20 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not poisonous" works well enough when you're starting from rock bottom.

[ Tony crouches down to scrutinize the floor, the HUD tossing various pieces of observational data at him that he largely ignores. He presses a gauntleted hand flat against it out of pure scientific curiosity before looking up at Kaz. ]

Is that a general question, or a question specific to this particular Ingress's choice in interior decor?

Hey! watch it, stupid. ( suiseiseki hisses as she narrowly avoids another trap that tony’s set off. he doesn’t seem to realize he’s doing it or maybe he just doesn’t care ( she figures it’s the latter ), but she’s sick and tired of searching these stupid houses nearly getting her head taken off. )

How about you try being a little bit more careful. We’re supposed to be searching for supplies… not adding to the body count. ( she murmurs the last bit under her breath as she considers throwing a book at his head. )
arcreact: that my party was the most epic party they ever crashed ((781) i was just told by a cop)

[ Tony eyes the kid over what looks like some kind of abandoned science setup - at least he thinks she's a kid, anyway - and quirks an eyebrow.

That may or may not confirm her "he isn't overly concerned about it" theory, or else he's just really good at playing it off as blasé. ]

Listen, this is my creepy abandoned house. If you don't like my methods, you can always go find your own. I mean, there are plenty.

[It's a peculiar situation in which Matt finds himself, in an abandoned house with a man with a particularly familiar voice (though, with the terrain messing with his senses as it is, he can't quite place it), on an alien planet full of various mysteries.]

[He's in full vigilante gear as he explores, keeping a safe distance from Tony (and trying to stay out of sight), until Tony, predictably, triggers one of the traps.]

[And out comes the Devil of Hell's Kitchen (or... wherever this is, anyway), from the roof, slamming into Tony to knock him out of the way.]

--Watch out!

[aaaaaand getting sprayed with some kind of paralysis gas. Now he's on top of Tony, and he can't move. This is awkward.]
arcreact: so i found myself puking in the middle of times square, in a three piece suit. a spongebob came by and patted my back ((914) hangover didn't kick in until 4pm)

[ On the bright side, Tony goes down as easily as someone who 1.) is not expecting to be tackled out of the blue by a masked vigilante and 2.) is generally used to weighing many hundreds of pounds more than he currently does.

He curbs his instinct to deck his (attacker? no - doesn't seem like it) once he realizes the guy is helping. Trying to help. Except they're on a pile on the floor and honestly, yes, it's a little awkward. ]

Look. [ He's gonna go for conversational. The fuck. ] I'm easy, but not quite this easy.
