"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."
☄ lights down low The lighting has dimmed in all the rooms and halls, the normally crisp air that is pumped from the vents low, and all machines and tech are running at half-speed. These effects can be found throughout the ship. Water in the showers remain hot for only a few minutes before reverting to cold. Recreational equipment powers off not long after it has been turned on. The sanitation and water filtration systems require an hourly manual reboot, and all unused areas of the ship have no power allotted to them until a crew member steps inside. Even then, most functions are not optimal. It’s as if the Moira has been transformed into a dark house with only a candle flickering on the window sill. ☄ reuse & recycle The Captain and First Mate are quick to establish that this is a new regime and go about making the ship and its crew more efficient in the wake of their change in course and the low power state of the ship itself. This means they will systematically inspect each occupied barracks room and leave notes for what needs to be disposed of or stowed away. Unlike before, this is no longer a pleasure cruise, and each member of the crew is a guest on board; they will not tolerate useless clutter. Anything seen as unnecessary will be either placed into storage in the Cargo Bay or disposed of through the airlock. This new need for efficiency also extends to the need to conserve resources until they reach their destination. The showers are set to an automatic timer to minimize water waste. Those few minutes of hot water are all a crew member is now given. Meals are smaller, bordering on ration sizes, and luxuries are done away with entirely in order to preserve supplies so that the ship can go longer before needing to dock at a planet. ☄ new jobs, same faces The Captain and his First Mate, as expressed in their addressing of the Moira, explain that work efficiency is a priority. Applications for a head of the following departments will be accepted for a short period: Navigation, the Tower, Medbay, Defense, the Hold, Sanitation, Ingress work, and the Galley/Mess Hall. (Here.) After reviewing what they receive, one head of department will be chosen and tasked with helping crew find positions relevant to those departments and their own skillsets. They will be allowed to retain any positions that they held before that aren’t ship-functional jobs, but they will have to be done in leisure time. In two weeks time, they’ll be accepting department position applications which will be approved, and all those that do not apply will be assigned in accordance with their initial work application. They will also choose three individuals to act as guards of Ploiatos to ensure that there is a rotation available at all times. Will you choose to follow this new decision and promote yourself into a position of responsibility? Or will you simply wait for a reassignment? |
james t. kirk • star trek (aos)
[ Jim is feeling out of sorts and that is perfectly acceptable. He's been pulled through some weird transport thing onto an unknown ship and told that there is no way, save teamworking their way across an unknown (for him) galaxy, to get back to his universe. Then there's also the mention of a contract and a job, and seriously where the hell did his boots go?
God, he loses enough shirts as it is.
But okay, that stabby thing was annoying and he's not sure if he likes this MID thing, but it isn't as if he can take it off. He rubs at his wrist where it was implanted, face screwing up. Is it supposed to itch? Cause it itches for him. That's generally a bad thing. To top things off, he's wandering a ship that isn't his to get his bearings, and trying not to barge right in on the captains. Captains he doesn't trust in the slightest. Captains who he apparently has to report to as Interpersonal Relationships Officer in order to help everything run as smoothly as possible.
Wonderful.
So, if anyone wants him after medical. Pick a deck, any deck, and let's see where we end up if you haven't tagged in with him elsewhere already. ]
☆☆☆ after the address // passageways and quarters ( how does it feel to be on a sinking ship? )
[ As if this entire situation weren't unnerving enough, there's suddenly a change in command due to finding out that there is a murderous being on board that hasn't been dealt with properly. He can imagine those already on board for some time are feeling off-kilter already, and those who are new, like he is, are on even more unequal footing. There's something off about all of this that he can't quite put his finger on, but his gut tells him that not everything is as cut and dry as Captain Charms and First Mate Smiles make it out to be.
The ship has fallen into a low power state, and it ignites memories that Jim would rather not think too hard on. Memories of the Enterprise falling into Earth's gravity without power. Of crawling into a warp core without protective equipment on in order to save his crew. His family.
He swallows back those feelings, and focuses on regrouping in both thoughts and actions. His job here is straightforward, but he intends to err on the side of caution with giving information to the new guys in charge about any of the crew that isn't strictly necessary. Wouldn't be the first time he's fudged a report, after all.
It's all relative, right? ]
☆☆☆ lights down low // passageways ( how's our ship? )
[ As if the low-power state wasn't messing with him enough---everything is troublesome at the moment. But Jim puts on a brave face. He does it because he has run his own ship, and knows the benefit of crew morale, and in such a dismal situation like this, they are going to be needing that pretty regularly.
He's purposely going through the different areas, greeting those crew and passengers who are willing to talk for a little bit of time, and just generally trying to get to know everyone.
He's trying not to think about the fact that ration size portions leave a lot to be desired on the food front. Not to mention the old memories that dredges up. It isn't that he expected this to be a pleasure cruise, but these new rules seem a little ---extreme to say the least, but now isn't the time to address that. Now is the time to work on his actual duties, which is why he's making a point to smile, and ignore the fact that an ice-cold shower was not the way to start the day.
This is fantastic.
So, if he runs into you in the hall: ]
Hi, I'm Jim. Do you have a minute to talk?
☆☆☆ reuse and recycle//passageways and also random rooms ( bullshit. )
[ Jim might be new here, but he's pretty sure no one thought it was a pleasure cruise. The morale was sketchy at best, from his talks with Bones, and this sure as hell wasn't about to help boost it any. Jim understands the importance of crew safety, but morale is also an integral part of making certain that a ship and crew function optimally.
They've shut down the Ingress, and while they said it was damaged and unable to send anyone back to their respective homes, it feels a lot like a door slamming shut in the brig. He wants more information on this Acelight Delegation, and just what makes them so damn qualified that they can just waltz in like they have.
He also wants to know where the rest of the command crew are, and if the one who collapsed is safe.
Which is completely not why he is finding little alcoves where he can tamper a bit with the MID embedded in his wrist, or checking rooms he is able to see if he can bring up a console and gain access to a main computer or something. ]
☆☆☆ wildcard // hit me with your best shot. ( let me get some action from the back section. )
[ Didn't see anything up there that you liked? Hit me here and set us up, I'm easy. ]
reuse and recycle // Library?
And if he happened across any books that referenced Acelight Delegation or Midway Hub? As long as he was being optimistic.
Courser lay curled by his companion's feet, finishing off a bone that Adrien had managed to scrounge up for the bahari. The doctor had actually traded out his own breakfast rations to a nutrition bar in exchange for the bone, the bar currently sat -half eaten- on the table beside him.
The pair were in the shadows (what part of this damn ship wasn't in shadows at the moment) when both glanced up as the door opened and someone slipped through. Adrien recognized the man from Medbay intake and he arched an eyebrow as he quietly watched Jim hunt around for ... something?
When the man appeared to head for the library console, the doctor cleared his throat. ]
They shut that one down. Non-essential, I'm sure.
[ Non-essential or linked to reference material the crew didn't 'need to know' at the moment. Adrien was willing to take wagers on either possibility. ]
library!
Jim had stopped as he was addressed, grinned, and gave a nod. ] Most of the ones I've run into have been the same. Everything is shut off, except for this---[ He shows his MID. ]---thing. But, I'm hoping with a little elbow grease, and a lot of luck---
[ He moves over, ducking down under the station to get a good look at things. ] ---I can figure out how to reroute power.
Might not work, sure, but call me optimistic.
[ While he's taking a look, he catches a look at his companion. ] I'm Jim, by the way. I've, uh, never seen anything quite like your friend there. Has he got a name?

The corridor he's in when he runs into Jim isn't overly populated, but it's become a less-traveled one given their current state of affairs. Steve doesn't hesitate to offer him his hand at the greeting, having stopped to check his MID for any messages that might have come in. (There have been too many to keep track of in the last several hours.) ]
Steve Rogers. [ There's a nod at the question. ] Are you new? [ He doesn't recognize him as a familiar face on the directory, so chances are high that he is. ]

But he hasn't been here long enough to go off anything but his gut, and getting to know people is the first step in getting his bearings. That---and wandering dark passageways, apparently. ]
Nice to meet you, Steve, and yeah, I'm new. [ He looks around, not seeing anyone but the two of them, and wonders what the guy is doing here. ] They, uh, tasked me with being their Interpersonal Relationships Officer.
Mostly I'm just trying to get my bearings. This isn't---official or anything.

She should have expected it, really. The other shoe was bound to drop eventually. But fortunately, she's been preparing for such an eventuality. And with the new food rations imposed, she's been working double-time in her hydroponics garden. Not that she can actually sustain the entire crew, but it's a form of contentious objection.
Loaded with a crate of strawberries, she's making her way to the barracks when he stops her. And Fatima does a literal double-take.]

He waits, longer than he normally would, as he sees Jim make use of their newly equipped technology to converse with their newly self-appointed captors. Only when the conversation seems to have concluded does Spock approach, calmly with his hands at his lower back as he oft does.]
Jim.
[It is a knowing tone, likely familiar to his friend by now, but it begs nothing more than Jim's attention, even if the relative concern lurking in the tone may be evident to a small few.]

Instead, he's here. It is beyond frustrating. Apparently, he is not alone, either.
He looks up, a little shocked. God, did the transport thing do that much of a number on him and watching the feed with all the new information, nevermind all of the medical stuff---? ]

wandering.
And now there's a new sheriff and deputy in town, and the doctor's none too pleased with either of them. Maybe he's just been ruined for other captains after having served under the best, but this lot they've got running this ship are leaving much to be desired. They didn't inspire loyalty among the crew, much less any confidence in their decisions. It's a shame Leonard doesn't carry the title of chief medical officer anymore, or he'd try to get these yahoos deemed unfit for duty.
But since he's not the CMO aboard this ship, he'll just have to keep his head down and hope that this ship reaches their destination soon. For the sake of sanity and everyone else's.
He strides through the dimly lit corridors with a soured expression, his memory guiding him on the familiar path from medbay to his barracks. He's just about to lift when he crosses paths with someone, a figure he can't quite recognize but can see is scratching almost incessantly at his wrist. He marches on up to the idiot in a huff, ready to grab person by the scruff of the neck just to get them turned around to medical. ]
Scrapin' at it is only going to make it worse.
no subject
And he doesn't even like that.
He wouldn't be scratching at it, if it weren't itching incessantly. He's pretty sure he's not having a good reaction to whatever this stuff is made out of, and that's all kinds of problematic. He hadn't thought, until this moment, about all the brand new allergens he had to be concerned with. Or the very, very unnerving fact that he does not have the hypo-epi that Bones gave him to take on away missions.
So distracted is he by the growing red of his wrist as he waits for the lift, that he doesn't clock the footsteps until there's a voice---a very grumpy and familiar voice. ]
Wha---[ Jim turns, confusion turning into a bright smile. Despite the circumstances, it's amazing to lay eyes on his best friend. ]---Bones!
You're---wait, how long have you been here I just---[ He had only had breakfast with him that morning, and walked a few decks of the ship for inspection. But this month was already worse. First there was the change of power with the captains, and now the low power mode was kicking in. She's used to rationing, it was a necessity for anyone that grew up during the Depression like she did, or spent any amount of time out on the field in war. But she had spent five months on this ship, others plenty more than that, and they had never really wanted for much. This was a striking change, and one she knew plenty were going to struggle with. Especially those already having to adjust to the way of life on the ship.
So she made herself available. She had been visiting public areas during breaks from her job encrypting and decrypting messages, offering help to those who needed it as much as she could.
