[Their group arrived pretty immediately back to the city and John wastes no time taking to the air and immediately flying as fast as possible to the zoo. If Zee dropped them off at the head of the woods, he'd be dropping the others off at their start points.
He had to get there before Dave left.
He almost crashes into a few trees in his haste to get there but soon enough he lands in front of the zoo and slows his descent into a weird kind of jog, immediately halting in front of the entrance to wait. Any minute now...hopefully.
...fuck, what if he missed him already?
He'll give it ten minutes at least. That's all he can do before ruining the surprise.]
[ it would have been easy to miss dave if he hadn't taken the time to confirm with byakuya their timers weren't about to run out if they split for the duration; if he hadn't spoken to his teammates before heading out, the desire to go home immediately counterbalanced against duty and exhaustion.
and he does look exhausted, when he leaves the zoo, shooting off a text to rose before starting one up to john. it's impossible to see any dark circles under his eyes while he's wearing his shades, but he's a little pale and wan, hair messed up from running his hands through it like he sometimes does when he's all nerves.
he's otherwise visibly more or less fine although he's tense and he has in his sylladex a less than stellar heartstone. ]
[He notices Dave's general demeanor first and it's a spike of worry as he notices he looks asleep on his feet. He thinks about the conditions they went through and even though his left side has healed since their run through the woods he remembers how brutal that had been.
But...he doesn't yell to get his attention in case he startles him, but he does step a little closer to be in his line of vision.]
[ john. he tenses up for some reason initially but they're in recolle, not up north with shapeshifting wolves, and he almost doesn't care if john's an illusion or not. or well of course he cares, but dave just stares for a moment, feeling strangely awkward despite constant texts.
then he steps closer even if he still doesn't touch. ]
[The tension is alarming and there's a short wave of worry from his heart stone (lost in his sylladex and carefully stored) but he smiles anyway as he takes another stop closer.]
They can wait. No. It's just...[His hand reaches out to touch but doesn't quite make contact just in case.]
[ it's not his worry and while he's used to other people's emotions buffeting him, there's still a spike of anxiety even if dave's expression doesn't change because the last thing he needs in life is everyone being able to tell exactly what he's feeling (even he doesn't need that).
but john reaches out his hand and dave automatically completes the gesture, and there's relief at the contact. ]
[That's about the answer he was expecting and he does his best to swallow down how unnerved he is. It seems to work and he's immediately wrapping his fingers around Dave's hand to pull him closer. The motion doesn't exactly stop either as he keeps pulling to draw Dave straight into his chest to hug him tighter than usual.]
That's fine. I want to make a stop somewhere first but not for people.
[ the not-usual-anymore pause before dave responds, hugging john back. he doesn't even bother to pay attention to the swirl of emotions tangled inside him because he rarely does, even now when he's aware it might not be the best move. the quietly desperate loneliness lodged in his chest eases a little at the contact and the relief doesn't fade.
and it's john.
there's the sharp and painfully fierce love that dave's associated with him for ages, friendship and loyalty and aimless want, the too-deep edge of being hopeless in love and the frustration that in twenty four hours (less, ticking away) they'll be back where they started again.
he clings tighter. his voice is perfectly calm, though. ]
[Steadying breaths are the only thing for a few moment when Dave does hug back, a broad hand sweeping over Dave's shoulders and keeping him close. It's hard to explain what, exactly, he wants to do next and he doesn't mind the clinging.]
Grocery store. I think it might be a good idea to send us both back with some extra food. [...back. Maybe...they should talk about that.]
[...well. Give him a moment to think before he's turning instead and crouching in a position Dave will recognize as one he takes whenever he carries Dave around.] Luckily there is a store not far from here and we can shove stuff in our sylladexes since I do not have the car.
[ a beat of surprise, but okay, he takes his hands from his pockets and loops his arms around john's shoulders, and he's...light as ever, sorry john. ] I've got a ton of free space, yeah.
[Still worrying, but he's too excited about having Dave here to really let that weigh him down. He'll just have to keep him as long as he can and he holds onto Dave's legs as he begins to walk.] You might not by the time we leave if I have anything to say about it.
...Let's hurry, okay? I want to get back to the room. [ he just. buries his face against the back of john's neck. ] Maybe leave Mewpac with Rose for the night.
[There's a nod.] If we only have a small amount of time I think leaving her with Rose is a good idea. I promise I will be fast. Just a few things.
[He' snot even going to a main grocery store to save time, heading in once they get there and picking up a few necessities like bread, jelly, cheese, meat, pasta, sauce, other stuff like that. He doesn't bother removing Dave from his back as he packs everything into a basket and pays for them.]
[That's fine by him, honestly, and he doesn't seem inconvenienced about Dave being partially asleep on top of him. He throws the groceries into the empty slots of his sylladex without thinking about it (not really caring how it looks, actually) and he begins to carry Dave and groceries back to the dorm. He doesn't jostle him very much, walking up the stairs and everything to unlock a room they haven't seen for almost two weeks.]
We're home. [A soft mumble so he doesn't disturb him too much.]
Just...wondering. [ he drops off of john's back and stretches, but there's serious concern coming off of him fUCK YOU VERY MUCH HEARTSTONES FOR FUCKING UP A PERFECTLY GOOD POKER FACE. ] I know some people have...damaged theirs, in battles and shit.
