A. A Mognet Letter to all Heroes (Fri, Sept 23rd)

Yo. Is it just me, or has it been kinda boring around here lately? We should get together and play some games or something. Poker, Baccarat. I can teach you if you don't know how to play. You nerds can even bring your weird Triple Triad cards and your board games and stuff. It'll pass the time.

B. Games Day (Sat, Sept 24th)

[It's taking place in one of the big rooms in the observatory. Santa's borrowed tables and chairs from some of the surrounding rooms, and he's set up them up with poker chips and fresh packs of cards. He's also ~~made~~ bought some snacks, which he's set up on tables along the side of the room.

If Heroes are up for gambling, there are tables where they can play for gil or for favors. Santa is there in his bank suit, and he's happy to act as your dealer. Just remember, the house always wins. Don't worry, any gil you lose goes to charity. There are also tables for Heroes playing just for fun. ~~LAME.~~ ]

[Chiaki walks in wearing a baseball cap with the word 'LEDGERMAN' emblazoned on it, carrying in a large and rather unwieldy box full of gaming supplies. And then she walks out and gets another. And another. And begins unpacking them.]

Does anyone want to play the Cones of Dunshire?

[He gestures to the other side of the room, where there are still a couple empty tables. Santa's mentally labeled it 'Nerd Corner'.]

I've never heard of it. You're prob'ly gonna have to teach people if you want 'em to play with you.

[Cloud balks in surprise at the boxes that Chiaki brings in. However that surprise is quickly overtaken by curiosity.]

What kind of game is it? ....wow this is some collection. Do you need a hand?

It's a game I came up with a little while ago. I never got to try it out with people.

[And out of one of the boxes comes the rulebook. It's pretty huge.]

You can help me set up the board if you want.

How many players is it?

[Aang will bow out if someone else wants to play, but making your own games is really cool.]

It's for eight to twelve players. There are two wizards, a maverick, an arbiter, two warriors - the game can be played with one warrior, but it's not as good - a corporal, and the ledgerman, which is basically just the scorekeeper and gets to wear this hat. There are also shamans, farmers, alchemists, abbots, and brinksmen.

It is a very nice hat. Let's try to find more players so we cna try it out.

[After some walking around, Cloud takes a seat at the table that Santa is standing behind. He takes a moment to look over the table in front of him before looking back up at the dealer.]

So, what are we playing?

It's Black Jack right now, but I can deal somethin' else. And there's stakes, if you're a gambling man.

[There's poker chips and slips of paper for writing out wagers.]

Should I deal you in?

Blackjack works for me. I know that one.

[Cloud tosses down some gil to exchange for chips.]

Let's do this.

[Ok, Cloud, let's play. Santa exchanges the gil for some chips.

He deals. Cloud gets a 3 of Clubs and a 7 of Hearts. Dealer has a 10 of Diamonds and a face down card.]

So, can I hit you?

[Cloud looks at the cards and smiles. He's in a good spot right now. At least he knows that's not an ace under there.

He nods and taps the table with a finger.]

Yeah.

[Santa flips a card at Cloud. Queen of Hearts. Lady Luck's not treating the blond guy too badly tonight.]

Alright. Hit or stand?

[Cloud nods and waves his hand over the table.]

Stand.

Tazendra is quite happy to learn new card games, and has grabbed a spare deck and is examining the cards. "Ah, so there are four of each... but why do the numbers only count to ten?"

Tazendra is explaining a game that involves flipping coins and betting on it. Probably played in taverns for people too drunk to play cards. Tazendra had offered to demonstrate it after trying and failing to make a 'proper' deck of cards (which has four suits, but 17 cards per suit). "Let us say that the portrait is 'Orbs' and the obverse is 'Thrones'. You see, the coins are different where I am from."

[By now, Santa's rolling his eyes. He's thinking of just making a big card tutorial poster, to make this easier for everyone.]

Ok, here's the deal. The cards are numbered 2-10, and the A is ace, which is 1, and the face cards are the point values 11-13. They're a simplified version of the old Tarot Cards old timey people used to do divination. There's a bunch of different games you can play with 'em nowadays.

We have eidolons where I am from -- that is to say cards, not the creatures that summoners call -- but there are seventeen to a suit. I suppose the principle is the same.

Ok, sure. Just get somebody to walk you through the rules before you start playin' a game, then. It shouldn't be too hard to get the idea if you've played before.

I played quite a bit in my youth, when I lived in the capital. I wonder if the games are the same.

"Alright." Duster leans onto the table, focused on the display before him. He can follow simple instructions that involve coins rather than an entire deck of cards. He was curious about that one, but the explanation would wait another day. "So you bet which side will land up?"

"Not as such. You wager whether your coins will perform better than mine. You see, three of the same side are better than a split toss," Tazendra explained.

So there was more variety. This made it interesting. "How many plays do we have? Three coins, or can we do more?"

"It is done in rounds, of a toss of three coins," Tazendra explained. "If one does not have cards, or s'yang stones or other things, it can be played while one is enjoying a cup of wine."

"Sounds easy enough." It was more of a quick game to settle scores like stone-sheet-clippers rather than a long one of skill and chance. It left more time to sit back and enjoy company with friends.

"I can play a few rounds." Duster dug into his pockets in search of spare change.=
