Fortress of Solitude
WHO: The Brigand Leader, LOCKED only to members of her guild
WHAT: Construction of the Brigand Fortress is now complete. The Brigand Leader gives a tour, assigns rooms, and discusses upcoming plans.
WHEN: Early March
WHERE: ????
NOTES: If you would like your character to be mugged as they travel from Aqures Ixen, I can set up a thread for that. PM or Plurk me to plot! If you want your character to be a genuine part of the guild (not a mole), we can handwave the recruitment too.
It had taken some time to construct a fortress that was not only durable, but well concealed as well. It wasn't something easily spotted from the road, as it was hidden in the thickest parts of the woods, where the blackberry brushes grew wild and the beasts were particularly nasty. If that didn't deter a wandering fool, then the warren of goblins that had made a deal with the brigands would gladly deprive intruders of their lives and their gil.
Though she couldn't construct some of the trick rooms that the Brigand Warlock had made, the fortress was modeled much the same as it was in the Valley of Spielburg. There were sleeping quarters for the men under her employ, and a few women as well. There was a kitchen and dining area, though most members were encouraged to cook and eat their meals outdoors when the weather allowed.
The Brigand Leader's quarters were not luxurious, nor particularly spacious. There was a desk with a small pyramid of rolled maps, and a few assorted books on the monsters of the world, the history and culture of the different regions, and other sources of vital information needed to survive in the world of Crystallis. Rather than a bed, there was a pile of thick furs, and an enormous silver bearskin rug stretched out in front of the fireplace. A few trophies from some of her monster hunts decorated the walls, and there was a chest containing a collection of gems, gold, and trinkets either collected from slain monsters, or gifted to her in exchange for her connections and services. This was used primarily to barter for supplies, or to serve as bribes when she needed to get into certain places. Only one key would allow anyone to get into her chambers, and that key was owned by The Brigand Leader herself. No one else was allowed to set foot inside without her permission.
Of course, her most valuable associates had been granted rooms of their own to use and outfit as they desired. The two alchemists Ales had convinced to join were given a laboratory where they could further conduct their research in peace. They were in high spirits after their most recent success, and The Brigand Leader had rewarded them in turn.
No one knew much about The Brigand Leader herself, save that she was fearless, and she got results. What they did know was that she was from Flence, and from what they could glimpse of her from beneath the hood of her dark violet cloak, her hair was brown and a few inches past shoulder length. Beyond that? She was a mystery. Those who sought to test her leadership were quickly put down in combat to show them her strength. When she did, her eyes were cold. After their defeat, they were given but one warning: Try again, and she would kill them. She would not tolerate those with brittle loyalty.
As for her associates, she informed them of her upcoming plans in quiet. The first, on Ales's suggestion, was to investigate Downapolis. She did not like the sound of these cultists, and it was worth looking into to see what they were about. The Brigand Leader wanted to know if it was possible to go in undercover. If they were strong enough to drive such a large group of heroes out of the city and into the tunnels, killing dozens of them in the process, then they were not a force to be taken lightly. They needed to find out if they were useful, or a threat. If they were a threat, then they needed to know how to take them down quickly before they gathered their main strength.
Then there was the city of Downapolis itself. The Brigand Leader wanted a few outposts scattered throughout the world, just to serve as a backup in case the main fortress was compromised. Downapolis and Aerilon were her first choices, as they were relatively clear of the Calamity's encroachment, and not regularly visited by Heroes of Light. The submarine they'd swiped from the Underground Prison was hidden in Aerilon, and as the place was shady to begin with, she didn't think it would take much effort to work out a deal with the government, or possibly undermine them.
There were jobs for each of her allies, should they be amenable to taking on a few tasks. They had but to ask, for she had taken stock of their strengths and abilities, and had a few ideas as to where they would be best utilized in the field.

Open!
He'll have to come up with traps for potential intruders. He has a list of ideas drawn out - steaming pipes, blades that can only be stopped with a key or a hidden pin - but that will take time. There's also the matter of finding a place to hide his future giant robot. He voiced his idea of disguising it as part of the fortress's roof, but that will depend on his ability to build a properly transforming robot.

She had only a vague idea as to what a robot was, particularly a giant one, but she was definitely intrigued by the idea. Not only would it serve as a means of defense, but also as a sort of self-destruct option to hide any compromising evidence of the brigands' identities if it came down to that. That's why she'd come, to see if he had any blueprints or sketches, as well as to see how he was settling in.
Ellie didn't care to battle people too viciously to gain their trust, but she had to admit, she did value Ales enough that she wanted to prove that she was everything she'd confided to be and nothing more. He held her most vulnerable secrets, she'd be a fool to try casting him away.

He laid out a plan for a trap-laden hallway leading to this room on the desk. "I was just thinking of redesigning this place for extra security. This fortress is wonderful, but I thought...why not make it special? Add some traps, some dangerous areas to deter potential intruders. It's quite fun to do that."
Those were fun to design on his sky fortress. It didn't stop Rayman from reaching his area of central command, but if only Ales had put more thought into it, he could have stopped him completely.

Curious about his blueprints, she strolled up to the desk and leaned on one hand to examine what he'd written up. She stroked her chin thoughtfully, the corners of her mouth hinting at how pleased she was at his ingenuity.
"My Brigand Warlock had many similar ideas. He was quite remarkable." There was even a touch of fondness in the way she spoke of him. "Yes, I approve of these plans. What do you need from me to implement them?"
no subject
"Warlock? I didn't peg you as the type to be in contact with actual magicians." He didn't like the idea of magic, and magic users had to do something special for Ales to have something other than a negative opinion of them. "Most in my world are lazy or have their heads full of hot air. Never saw a link between them and secret organizations."
He pulled out a gear with irregular teeth and laid it on by Ellie's hand. "Not much, just spare parts. I'm working on a contraption that can either shoot out arrows or open a lock depending on how far some guy turns the gears, but it'll take lots of little pieces. I can steal some here and there from the workshop, but I can't get caught. Don't want to ruin my respectable reputation just yet."
no subject
She picked up the gear and examined it curiously before setting it down again. "I'll send some men to the old shipyards. Perhaps we may salvage something from the airship ruins that you may find useful. If not, we can at least melt down the scrap and fashion what you need, yes?"
no subject
"Yes," he answered when he drew his mind back to the present. "I've done most of my early work with scrap metal, and I can do it agian."
no subject
"Is there anything else?"
no subject
"Well, the only thing I can think of is the attack on the Cult. Are you looking into intelligence gathering for now?"
no subject
Like a bar fight. All she had to do was strike up a conversation with someone who felt passionately about the Heroes of Light one way or the other. If they hated the Heroes, she could open up her own tirade on how disgusted and disappointed she was with them. If they spoke in favor of the Heroes, she would punch that person. Either way, she was bound to get a cultist's attention eventually.
"The problem is the amount of time that needs to be dedicated to this project," she blew out her breath. "We're just starting to gain notoriety. While it is good that the others don't find out about the Brigand Leader for some time, I do not like leaving our men unsupervised for long periods of time.
no subject
She needed all the help she could get. "Work with Malik as much as you trust him. It's important we figure out what to do as soon as possible." He crossed his arms, then a small smile appeared on his face.
"It's funny you mentioned the Warlock friend of yours. In my world, I was called The Magician by the people that trusted me. Long story, its an ironic nickname, but what I'm saying is..."
He looked at Ellie to look her in the eye, hoping to spot agreement before she spoke it. "I can watch over your men while your gone. My last flight for the month is tomorrow, so I'll be free to watch over this place for weeks."
no subject
In the end, if Ales meant to betray her, she would take care of it swiftly and brutally. The brigand forces were still growing, and if her efforts were to be ruined, better now than later. It was easier to start over when there was less to lose. What was more, this would be a good test to find out how much she truly could place her trust in him.
"Agreed," she decided with a nod and a smile. "But I have a request. Do not make it appear as if I am gone. Not all of these brigands are those to whom I would readily present my back. If any of them are to betray me and attempt to usurp my leadership, they should not see you as the one who would report suspicious activity to me." She was still getting to know these men, just as they were getting to know her and judge whether or not she was a good leader they could follow without question.
"Also, I would like to hear this story of how you received your name, and why it was considered ironic." Later, if he wasn't in the mood, but eventually she wanted to know where he was coming from.
no subject
Ellie trusted him. That was a good sign. If all the world was to turn against him, he had at least one friend left.
"We'll see when we have time." It wasn't a story he felt like sharing to anyone, but when the time would come, he may as well admit it. They were right; keeping all these things to himself would not do any good to his mental health.
