date/time: Early Nov through Nov 11th
content: A mingle log for rebuilding the docks and/or generally if you'd like to have your character help with a mini-project. Feel free to throw up your own TLs! I am also still on slowatus until the 6th but wanted to put this up with ample time before Sandman!
warnings: N/A. If you would like to handwave your involvement, please just lmk and I'll add you to a list or something so everyone can just assume your character was around

The wood, cut and planked, sits in a pile on the beach, covered in whatever tarp-like object can be found to keep it from getting wet. On the bright side, the ferry comes in when they finish gathering supplies for the dock - so they don't have to gather more, and they don't have to rebuild a ferry. Still, large trunks are prepared for weather and hammered into the water, and don't get much of a chance to stand alone before a small group of people descend on them to cobble together a little dock. Not as grand nor as finely-made as the previous one, it will be nonetheless sturdy and usable, with hopefully no further changes for the last two years it may need to exist.

▶ 01 CHEATER CHEATER?

( would it be a cheating to try and fix the dock with magic? probably. and while ambrose is actually trying to put in the work and use hammer and nails and blood, sweat and tears (seriously, he's smashed his thumb a few times), he can't stop himself from using magic to do things like bring supplies over to him or to screw in a particularly tough board.

it's still going to get done and it's going to be good but ambrose isn't really meant for total manual labor. he swings the hammer about and smirks at his handiwork. )

Good job, me.

( proud of himself, yep. )

▶ 02. REST

( he's done a lot of work so ambrose thinks that that, of course, deserves a break. he's found himself some water and he's sitting back from the work going on, sipping it idly.

his legs are stretched out and his hand is tucked underneath his head. he can't really get any sun considering the darkness but he can try and imagine it.

it's just not working very well. )

[ he's observing that, and there's a vague question on-- ]

Why don't you just use your magic all the time?

[ he's actually curious. he doesn't see why, if you have a skill, you wouldn't use it. same as people who were just so obnoxiously normal. like him.

he sets a load of wood down, almost like a challenge. ]

Well, I used to do just that because I lived exclusively with witches and warlocks but here?

( that wasn't the case. )

I don't do that here because I don't want to freak anyone out or to do a spell that backfires because this place is a little out of its mind.

Has that happened? The spell backfiring?

[ he hadn't heard that-- so that would be welcome new context. from what he'd thought, everyone was doing their magic all over the places.

or advertising it on the networks. ]

Not to me personally but I know some of my magic doesn't work.

( anything light based, that is. )

So, better safe than sorry though I'm going to probably throw that out the window because I'm no good with manual labor.

I see no reason why you shouldn't.

Unless your magic comes with the caveat that it's not good for architectural integrity. But honestly, not sure manual labor will fix that either.

[ he is a good influence, honestly. ]

( are you encouraging him to use magic? that's why he likes you, jason. )

But what would everyone else think when I get everything done and go sit down and drink a margarita while they're still struggling?

( would he be the most hated person in beacon? )

[ he is absolutely encouraging him to use magic. ]

Then they'd probably ask you to help them out too. And you'd be able to get so many IOUs-- hey, even mundanes like myself would probably say "thanks."

( not that ambrose was really trying to hear anything against magic. )

I haven't really been using a lot of magic lately. Didn't want it backfiring and blowing up in my face since this place is so unpredictable.

Yeah, but the only way to make something more predictable is to test it out, right?

[ he's continuing with the advice here. ]

Besides, if that's faster, well. More time for us to figure out actual plans, instead of rebuilding all the stuff we've broken.

Plans for getting out of here. In general, don't get too excited.

But if I did plan something, it wouldn't involve stealing a boat I couldn't drive.

( he frowns. )

To go where?

[ Aziraphale doesn't bat an eye watching Ambrose works, because he works about the same way. Cheating when it seems too much of a hassle to do something manually, and miracling any crooked nails and misplaced planks into tip-top shape.

But what he does take issue with is-- ]

Oh Ambrose, look at the state of your thumbs!

What about them?

( he's barely noticed what he's done, if he's honest. it stung when it happened but then he got preoccupied doing other things. )

Oh, that looks worse than it is. Don't fret too much.

No, no, come let me help you.

[ He leaves a hand out for Ambrose, and if he should be given his hands, he'll heal the thumbs a bit. They wouldn't heal all the way, but they'd be remarkably better. ]

Really, you don't have to worry so much.

( but he does dutifully pass his hands over with a slight wince. )

If you can't tell, I don't do much manual labor. I usually just...let others do it while I watch and enjoy.

There's a first time for everything.

[ Aziraphale waves a hand over his thumbs, and he should start to feel just a little bit better. At least enough that the pain is just a dull ache. ]

But you really should be more careful. I don't want any more injuries out of this dock.

( ambrose watches with interest in what aziraphale does and once the pain in his thumbs ease, he wiggles them a bit and exhales a laugh. )

I'm sorry. I've done manual labor in my time but not for awhile. Guess I forgot. I'm more used to working with...well, dead people.

( to be blunt about it. )

I was a mortician before you get any wrong ideas.

Oh, I see. Well, we are all dead here, so I don't see much of a change in scenery for you.

[ He smiles. It's a funny joke! Clearly. ]

But really, you shouldn't get hurt on behalf of this little project. I think I've already done enough damage.

[ He looks on regretfully. ]

I could make you some tea, if you would like a break.

Are you telling me to slack off?

( usually it was someone telling him to actually get to work. )

Usually it's the other way around, you know, but here you are giving me permission to take a break.

You've got an injury! I won't have you get hurt on the job, dear.

[ At least Ambrose isn't giving him shit about the ferry. ]

You'll have sore thumbs!

( he's over the ferry. besides, he's pretty sure he probably would have done the same thing if someone let him drive. )

As long as my thumbs are intact, I think I'll be okay but I'll gladly take a little break.

( don't have to twist his arm or anything. )

I do like an excuse to be lazy.

Ah, you and Crowley would get along famously, I think.

[ Aziraphale goes to get a tartan thermos and unscrews the cap. ]

( the getting along with crowley thing, not the tea thing. the tea thing was absolutely an offer he was going to take. he nods his gratitude for the cup. )
