Gonna Be A Great Day - Open Mingle

Once everyone was able to connect to the worlds even despite the worries that abounded, business seemed to work as usual as the people of Ultra Metropolis seemed to also have their own festivals even in this world. Today, they had invited everyone into their world as a show of good faith, as the sky was lit up with the light of stars as the brilliant stars above were glittering despite the radiance of the Etemax Tree far away on the coast.

The people of Paxio were really welcoming, and some of them would love to battle the newcomers. But more importantly, it was Alolans who were really bringing their delicious fruits, foods and vegetables to the land as the beach zone was lit up with beautiful lanterns.

It's very magical, and there's actually some good stuff about this world, as the people of Duckburg, Crystal Cove, Ultra Metropolis and Alola mingled. And you should take this time to relax, it's going to be some time before anything will be done. The Kahuna are meeting with the leaders of each world right now, so don't worry too much about it.

The party is a blur for Zahra. It's nice, of course. Fun, even. To finally have a few moments to relax, not worry about all the damage they still had to make up for, to party and have a good time, to have fun in the sun ~~week after week it's just like I'm on vacation-~~

But still. Something feels missing. They can't- no, Zahra knows EXACTLY what isn't right. Who isn't here. Every time that they've achieved some kind of victory and earned a brief reprieve from the everything, there's always been her there, to hold them, to share the quiet moments together, to-

On the beach, a portal opens, and seven people stumble out. Five of them are easily recognizable by those from the world where Duel Monsters was created: Muto Yugi, Jounouchi Katsuya, Mahaad, Mana, and Kisara. There are two more that are a bit more unfamiliar, however: a short woman with a ridiculously ostentatious pompadour (Hideo), and another who only Jounouchi may be able to recognize as Kawai Shizuka. She's grown taller, muscular, even. Her bangs hang in front of her eyes, completely obscuring them, and her style of dress leans far more... practical, now. But she's still his little sister (older than the Jounouchi that's been living on Alola, but it's the spirit of the thing).

Zahra's boba smoothie slips from their hands, falling on the ground.

"SHIZUUUKAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" They immediately begin sprinting towards her, arms outstretched and tears running down their face as they stumble over themself trying to get to her.

Despite her obscured vision (Jounouchi can see a pair of wings briefly flare behind her), Shizuka immediately turns to face Zahra and breaks into a wide smile, tears dripping from her hidden eyes. "ZAAAHRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" She runs towards Zahra with much more dignity, but no less passion.

When they meet, Zahra and Shizuka embrace, run their hands through one another's hair, whisper into one another's ears, laugh brokenly, then... kiss. A beautiful, passionate kiss for all the world to see, intimate and glorious and wow they have been at it for a minute straight now and still haven't come up for air

Ushio had come from Alola and he and his Exadrill were wandering around. Jacket slung over his shoulders, he was looking around. Some faces looked familiar, there was the Kaiba Brothers whom he ran into, some familiar Alolan people who were here for the festival, Kahuna Olivia and Hala, and many girls of similar ages.

Even Champion Ash was catching up to many of his friends who had come out for this. But as he wandered around, he sat down tiredly, and sighed. "Seems like it's going to be one of those days."

Zahra can't believe what they're seeing as they cling on to Shizuka. Their eyes dart from the badge, to the jacket, to the scar, to the badge again. Yugi (their Yugi's) gaze follows the same pattern while.

"...figures that somebody like you would become a pig."

"ZAHRA!" Yugi protests.

"No, no. They have a point. Dear, is this the one that-"

"The first one Atem used his powers on? Yeah. Like I said, figures he'd become a pig."

Ushio gives a tired sigh, leaning his head back for a moment. Figures.

"You know," he said, not even meeting their glare. "It's times like this I wonder why Yusei and Judai even gave your people's world the time of day to fix the cracks in reality? Can't you just stop calling me a pig at least? I'm doing my job like every person in Neo Domino, I don't need your bull when there's hardworking people keeping the streets safe."

"I've actually compared notes with Kaiba on this one, and if the entire world's police force can be bought out by a cult easy as pie in both of our worlds, I highly doubt that whatever branch you're from is any less corrupt."

"I'm, um. Sorry, Ushio-san." Yugi awkwardly tugs at his collar. "They had a... bad time with the police on their world. It's. Exactly like they said."

"Worse, even," Shizuka mutters, crossing her arms.

At this, Ushio actually raised his head. "Do you mind? I've survived mind crushing, a quake that leveled Domino City, Ancient Egyptian Gods that rampaged across my city, Incans and Earthbound Immortals, my literal love interest nearly being drowned to death at one point with Jack, and now one of my best friends is playing time cop keeping YOUR world from breaking into little itty bits in the background because someone named Paradox tried to play god and steal all the cards in the dimensions, so please..."

Ushio sighed as he sat up fully. "Try not to judge every cop as bad just because your world is a shitshow. Our world has been trying desperately to fix everything one bad future deemed as unbreakable and every Duel Timeline has been suffering from it. Okay? Do you people want a smoothie? I'm buying."

Zahra's ready to retaliate immediately. Ushio's just a convenient target for all of their gripes about pre-reform global society wrapped up in a package shaped exactly like a horrific reminder of some of their (Atem's) worst deeds and all the trauma that came with it. It's not his fault.

But then he starts talking. And that indignant index finger begins lower millimeter by millimeter until Zahra completely deflates. "I... yes. A smoothie would be fantastic."

"And some explanations would be nice as well," says Shizuka.

Once they were all situated with smoothies, and they were good smoothies, Ushio sipped his drink. "Your world, like many others were targeted by a single man, named Paradox. You might not noticed it because Paradox Prime is long since gone, but a single incident destabilized all the Duel Timelines across the board. As a result, a thousand branching timelines were born."

He sipped his drink again. "As a result, the Duel King consulted with the King of Dimensions and Yusei, one of my friends on the effects. They projected if they didn't do something, the Duel Worlds would crumble to dust. So Yusei and Judai, two of the most powerful Duelists who are connected with Space, Time and Dimensions, took it upon themselves to deal with the Duel Dimensions and repair the bits and pieces that were left behind when Paradox literally caused Sin World to damage the already fragmented history of the Duel Worlds and throw the past, present and future into ruin."

Surprisingly, it's Yugi who's the loudest slurper as the three listen to Ushio's impromptu briefing. His long shlorps would wake the Earthbound Immortals ahead of schedule. Zahra, who's a decently loud slurper, doesn't even compare. Shizuka, of course, is dead silent.

Regardless of the highly inappropriate shlurps, all three of them pay close attention to what Ushio is saying. "I don't think I've heard any of those names," Zahra says, taking a thoughtful schlorlp.

Shizuka gives off the distinct impression of rolling her eyes, despite not having any irises or pupils to roll. "Paradox sounds familiar, but-"

Yugi snaps his fingers. "Oh! Didn't Paradox Industrial partner up with KaibaCorp to make Moment? You know, to help sponsor that tournament they're holding at Nazca?"

"Yes, that's right." Shizuka nods.

Zahra stares blankly at Yugi and Shizuka. "H. How much did I miss in the month that I've been gone."

"...Paradox Industrial has been around since, like. Forever." Yugi tilts his head to the side. "They were the ones that bought out I2 after Duelist Kingdom, remember?"

Zahra pales. "I definitely don't remember that. Yako and Gekko took over after Pegasus disappeared, not- whatever this is. Ushio, could it be..."

"No, Paradox popped up out of nowhere just a little while ago. I..." Shizuka furrows her brow. "Something's wrong." Under her sleeve, something's glowing.

"Yeah Paradox is deeply connected with Momentum. I would suggest moving your grandpa before the Quake shatters Domino City." remarked Ushio in the blandest, if serious tone. "Inform whoever you trust there to get anyone important out of the city before 20XX in around that point of time before the Momentum Device is switched on."

"Although, the man who turns it on, is NOT a bad person." added Ushio. "Dr. Fudo is a good man. Just reminding you all of that before you all decide to do anything prematurely."

All the blood in Zahra's face drains away. "Wait, what's going to happen to Domino City?" they're far more preoccupied with that yes,

"Hold on. Yugi, you said the tournament is happening in Nazca?" Shizuka, however, is focused on more immediately pressing matters. "They're turning it on there?"

"Yeah, Hideo's riding duel got really popular, remember? So Paradox decided to make it an official format and-"

Now it's Shizuka's turn to pale. "Oh no. You don't think they're trying to..."

"Sweet Slifer, d- do you think this Paradox guy is trying to awaken... whatever possessed Hideo that one time?" Zahra looks very, very afraid all of a sudden. "If one riding duel was enough to wake up their Servants, then if you have a bunch of them happen at once and then detonate this Moment thing..."

"Right. I should probably explain." Shizuka sighs, forcing herself to focus. "I don't know how much you know about our world in particular, but there's these immortal... things bound beneath Nazca's geoglyphs. I suspect you've had an encounter with them in your time. When we were on our little year-long apocalyptic roadtrip, one of our friends was indoctrinated into a cult. We met her in Nazca, Zahra tried a really stupid stunt to get her to wake up- a duel on a motorcycle, of all things. The moment a Synchro was summoned, we woke up these... things that were servants of the gods beneath, and Hideo got possessed by them instead. That's when something called the Crimson Dragon gave me this," Shizuka rolls up her sleeve, revealing the Heart of the Dragon, "to fight them and stop them from awakening their masters. Afterwards, it told me to look out for the rest of the 'Signers' in around half a century and help them.

"I think Paradox is trying to move up the timetable."

"Don't go too crazy with presumption. Seeing a bad ending is what caused Paradox to cause this whole mess in the first place." said Ushio, sipping calmly. "And as a result, every Duel World suffered and splinter into little worlds, lowercase."

"You're right, you're right." Zahra sighs, dragging a hand down their face. "Still, we probably need to at least go check it out soon. It's basically my only job back home."

"Agreed. Let's get moving immediately."

"No, you stay here and recover."

"I-"

"Which one of us has stayed up for eleven days straight?"

"..."

"Look, I'm not going to go without you. Okay? But I can't have you getting hurt."

Yugi keeps slurping, looking on awkwardly.

Woah.

Uh.

Wow.

On the one hand- he's kinda happy? Ryuzaki wasn't any slouch back home, but having known Zahra for a bit, alternate Shizuka definitely has his blessing. Probably. They do get a bit.....mad at times, and then there's the whole puzzle thing (which reminds him, he needs to ask about where that went...)

Uh.

Oh. ...Huh.

"....man...wish I could do tha'..."

It's not what it sounds like guys he promises,

It takes almost another minute for the two of them to notice that anybody else is even present. Shizuka and Zahra part, Zahra stumbling from foot to foot before collapsing into Shizuka's arms (if they were depicted in an animated medium, their eyes would be doing that spinny spiral thing). Shizuka, however, seems steady as ever.

"Shizuka..."

"Zahra..."

The two of them look ready to go at it again, before Shizuka cocks her head to the side curiously. "Zahra, I swear if you've been cheating on me with an alternate universe clone, I'm going to do very bad things to you~" She only says it half-jokingly.

"Oh. Right." Zahra struggles to their feet. "So... hoboy. This is a lot. I guess I should- right, right." Their brain may be just a little bit scattered, still. "This is. Your brother. From a different universe. He's-"

"You're like me." Shizuka's voice is low, almost whispery. Relief, awe, gladness, and all sorts of other emotions swirl together in her voice. Then: "Oh my god, you're like me." Concern drowns out all the other emotions and she rushes towards Jounouchi while her actual brother looks on bemusedly. "Are you okay- I can't imagine- what happened, stars I can feel that scar from here-"

In the background, it turns out that Zahra is still love-dizzy and falls flat on their face. At least the sand is soft.

"Eh-" There is a pause, as Katsuya both listens and unintentionally predicts the conversation before him. Cheating? Chea? Wha- "O-Oi, why we talkin' abou'-"

Well, too late now he supposes, because he's being introduced now. Something feels....off. Somehow. He can't tell what, not initially and then-

And then Shizuka says that. And then he sees her face. Sees what's hidden, 'sees' what's there. And...

"Hey..." What... "H-Hey, what th' hell-"

'You're like me'. The words feel like ice, and he half stumbles in place, successfully managing one partial step backward in the shock. His expression is torn. An incredulous 'smile' that one would only expect to see in extreme denial, because anything, anything would be better.

"You're blind..." He shakes, and looks from Shizuka to his counterpart in confusion. "You're...how th' hell- Why..!? Tha' was s'pposed t'...the money was s'pposed..."

He holds his head, eyes already watering.

He hasn't even realized she spoke of his scar as if she were touching it yet.

"Tha's what I told her to do," mutters the other Jounouchi, rubbing his arm and looking away. "When Zahra gave 'er the prize money. But- but she used it to get me outta dad's instead."

Shizuka is too busy preoccupying herself with her "brother," hissing between her teeth as she feels the remnants of the sun god's fire in his scar. "Oh, Katsuya. I'm so, so sorry that you had to bear this burden in my place."

Oh, Shizuka. If only you knew.

Light glimmers from his dog-tags, and Katsuya is stunned. Gave her the prize money, as if his counterpart hadn't been there. As if he'd never been there, he thinks, and maybe he really wasn't, god only knows why but maybe he wasn't there maybe things Could get worse, maybe, maybe, maybe,

His eyes are filled with tears.

"No...nonononono..." 'Burden', she says, and that can only mean, "No, no, no way y' had t' face...not tha' thing, tell me y' didn'," he's whispering, despite already 'seeing' the answer in his mind. "Y' didn'...y'..."

They...

"Tw'ny minutes," he mutters, tears now going down his cheeks. If it was exactly the same she'll understand, the significance of the statement. "F'r tw'ny..."

'You were clinically dead for twenty minutes', he was told when he woke up all those weeks ago.

"...I was clinically dead." Shizuka falters slightly, leaning against her "older" "brother." "No, no, no, not you too, you were supposed to be safe and goof off and not worry about all of the nonsense that came with dueling before... before Doma..."

"Nnnnnononono, no, no-" This is getting worse, far worse, this is getting way way wa-

"I shouldn' be screwin' off when there's shit to do..! I don' care abou' th' nonsense, that ain'-"

...

"What th' fuck does Doma have t' even do w' this..!" he finally croaks, shamefully leaning back against the other and thus 'over' the other as he shakes. "What th' hell 'm 'I' doin' in these other places, 'f it's goin' t' shit like th's...?"

"After getting half your mind crushed? After falling back in with Hirutani and staying there for almost a year? After getting your soul stolen by Pegasus? All I wanted was to give you some of the peace you deserved, and now..." Shizuka sobs into Jounouchi's shoulder. "Is it your fate to get tormented like this no matter what? I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm so, so sorry..."

Shizuka is crying, and so is he. And realistically, it should still be that. They're sobbing, and bawling and,

Sorry, sorry, just. Gently breaking this awkward embrace and shaking his head now. "What?"

Alright, he's gotta focus on you now, double. "...He took yer soul? Hell wh's th's abou' Hirutani, he oughta be dead! I got scars on my eyes f'r tha' shit! An' tha' stuff def'nitely didn' happen t' Shizuka in my world!" So, this definitely isn't an even flip round the pair! And. "An' a mind cr-"

But thankfully his counterpart has enough of his wits about him to provide an (extremely sheepish) explanation. "Uh. Ya know how you and Honda used t'. Play. Extremely inappropriate pranks on th' girls at school? Well, uh. We went too far one time, and... ya also know how A- er, Yami went. A little overboard. In th' early days? Anzu kinda saved my ass—without her, it woulda been a lot worse—but. I wasn't able t' touch a card for... a year. More, probably. Things still give me th' heebie jeebies, honestly. An' so Shizuka went t' Duelist Kingdom while Hirutani took advantage o' my... compromised... state and..."

Well. The rest is history.

The Looming is Real-

But fortunately, 'Jonouchi' snaps the guy out of it. Katsuya turns, and while the odd aura of someone way older than he is lingers for a second it...fades. Utlimately, it fades and Katsuya has to frown.

It's nothing he can get incredulous over. Nothing like that but.

"..." For a moment he wants to protest. Scream, even. But....

Man. That's tiring, really. It's... "...y' say a year..." .... "So y' took it off then, righ'?" he asks, looking back to Zahra.

"It's... more complicated than that." Zahra sighs, crossing their arms... and leaning against Shizuka, who has returned to their side. ~~Look, give the two time to be touchy-feely, okay?~~ "Atem was basically already done instating the penalty when Anzu tried to stop him. Which. Sorta broke the whole thing. He escaped the penalty, but every time he touched Duel Monsters cards, it returned in full force until he stopped. When Atem and Anzu came to an... accord after Death-T, they tried removing it, but it didn't work. The penalty faded over time, but. Well. Like he said, the cards still give him the heebie jeebies."
