Are the women in this world and your own given as much opportunity to defend themselves as the men?

[ she doesn't wait for any answers, giving a humorless snort of laughter at the locket before continuing. it's not a directly related addition to her question, but it's certainly on the same train of thought: ]

Ridiculous that those already holding power are given the privilege of training to the highest levels of their skills, but those most in need of it are left to rely on the protection of others.

We have to. If we just cowered behind men all of us would be dead quicker than if we're all fighting. Especially since women tend to be better at it.

[ sorry she's not sorry but boys have a tendency to occasionally be very stupid. ]

And that's not always the case. [ she exhales. ] Unless you're scared of people rebelling, someone holding power should make it their duty to help train those who aren't in power.

[ she snorts her laughter again ]

Some don't see that far ahead. Some see it as the weak deserve to stay weak, while they gather all the power they can and withhold it from others. It works, even... for a little while. [ her voice and face are very clear on what she thinks of that. ] I've known too many kings who are bullies and wondered which one comes first.

Is your world at war?

That's usually why they lose their power after that little while. [ you get too cocky and boom, the populace just sets you right. she manages to hold back her own snort but a small smile forms on her face. ] If your king is a bully it's because they were one before. They just have more power to bully with.

[ her mouth opens for a moment, like she's about to answer before she remembers that it technically isn't true any more. ]

It was. There's still some places at war in the world, but those didn't have to do with the war I was fighting. I don't think I need to ask the same for you.

Not in the same sense I think, no. Even bully kings can still be mostly peaceful kings on their own borders.

Mostly peaceful.

[ it should be a question, but reyna doesn't manage quite the right inflection. instead she just gives the locket a rather— deadpan look. ]

[ a pause, then katsa's mouth twitch. ]

Even a neutral king has to show off his strength to prevent invasions. Men are always so concerned about the size of their lands.

[ if reyna was anyone else she would be laughing the comment. as it stands, it looks like she's about to for a moment before she just smirks a little. ]

And how well their soldiers fight with a sword. [ the size of their swords, same difference. ] You can't really call them neutral when they do that.

[ she's grinning back in full ]

Perhaps not, though they'll smile and lie and do what they can to keep up the charade, as they do about many things. You've experience with kings and power.

Or they just kick up a fuss and make themselves seem much more important than they actually are. Not quite kings, but self important men who think they deserve powers that they really don't deserve.

And who whine— far more than anyone should when they don't get their way.

It's a good thing most don't have the power to get their way no matter what others want. [ her expression closes ] That some can get those powers here... it's not something anyone should have.

It's only dangerous if there's no one who might stand in their way when it comes to using those powers for their own gain. No one's invincible.

No. But some come close. They find other methods. Even those who stand in their way, they can twist and control.
