Or maybe you find Mako in a much more hilarious position: crouching on the boardwalk in the middle of the flow of foot traffic, his face red, his legs and part of one arm encased in ice that's slowly steaming up into nothing. His other hand is wrapped in glowing fire, melting the ice. Anyone who looks like they're going to say something gets a glare and a mutter of: ]

[ Once he's regained control of his limbs and stopped freezing himself to things, the clear next order of business is gathering information. Having already heard some wild stories from the others who woke up with him, armed with the notebook in his backpack with his notes from Deerington printed helpfully inside, Mako is on a mission.
If you look even remotely available—standing on a corner, waiting for ice cream, staring out at the waves or coming out of a building in the city—Mako comes up to you with notebook out, looking serious. ]
Excuse me. If you have a minute, I have some questions I'd like to ask you.
[A few people have probably stopped to comment or look or try to help by now but Mako, man, you're kinda mean when you're mad and frozen to the floor.
It would be nice to say this is the first time Mako's been trapped by ice, but it isn't. And anyone who knows Mako knows this. But it is the first time he's frozen himself to the ground and anyone who knows Mako would never imagine it's self inflicted.
So when Bolin sees his brother up ahead, stuck down in a hunch, he can only assume one thing has happened. And sorry, but it's kinda funny. So he's in no hurry to jog up with worry, though Pabu jumps down from Bolin's shoulder and bounds up ahead of him to chitter at Mako in greeting.]
Boy, this is just not a good look for you, bro.
[Asked as he saunters up, hands in his pockets, shoulders easy. All of this is weird and kinda whacko, sure, but what else is new. And Trench happening around them isn't gonna make this any less funny.]
[ Bolin's commentary, being completely unhelpful and not at all useful for getting out of this, goes momentarily ignored.
This is largely because Mako is trying to push as much heat as he can into his free arm to melt the ice faster, which is making even more steam billow up, which is curling his hair and plastering it to his face and generally making him look like a wet fire-ferret.
Pabu, being mostly innocent, gets an annoyed huff, but Bolin gets a full-on unamused glare. ]
Korra had nothing to do with this. I haven't even seen her.
[ Huffing, Mako tries to yank his right arm free and fails. He's looking kind of... blue? That's weird, but probably because of the ice. Right? ]
[Definitely probably because of the ice. Let's go with that.
Bolin laughs and holds up his hands in defense, literally not bothered
about absolutely anything that's going on right now. Dressed in clean,
black robes with his welcome bag over his shoulder and feeling something
like a stealth ninja. Things are good in Bolin land, especially now that
he's found his brother.]
Well I dunno, who else can waterbend much less icebend- oh no.
[Cue panic. Is it suddenly very hot? why is this collar so
tight???]
[He might approach a tall man in dark garb, sturdy enough to handle life on shipboard, though currently, he's watching the passersby while sipping from a glass bottle of ginger ale.]
Regarding? [It's said with a bit of a suspicious drawl and a head tilt.]
[ This guy just went from potential source of information to extremely suspicious in about two seconds flat. With all his detective instincts flaring, Mako stands up straighter, scanning the man in front of him. Tall, watching people like he has nowhere to be.
Mako vaguely recognizes him, but it's hard to place anybody in the haze of his own memories. He lifts the notebook a little higher like a peace offering. ]
[Perhaps he's glimpsed the tall stranger about the town in Sodder's nightmare, perhaps they spoke briefly on the network. Mako's discomfort and that straightening up quietly amuse the tall stranger, but he's careful not to let it show.]
In cephalopod form? I did, in fact, though it took several tries. The sea seemed to want me back in it's bosom for reasons I'm puzzling over, though I suspect the powers in this place are as unpredictable as they were in the dream that shaped this world's reality.
[He might peer at Mako.]
Are you new to this world or were you part of that dream as well?
[It's been long enough since washing up on the rocks that Fern has managed to find a few other Sleepers. That's helped calm him down, having been a squid for him wasn't a great experience, and finding his friends has been his biggest reassurance so far.
So when he sees Mako out by the shore he doesn't hesitate in racing over to greet him. He's abandoned the robe given to him by a Waker, he doesn't really need it since he's regrown his grass clothing, though he has the bag supplied to him.]
Mako! H - [He expects his foot to land on more black sand, but he doesn't notice the ice. And unfortunately for him, grass is exceptionally good at sticking to ice, so when his foot hits the stuff it sticks.
And he promptly faceplants straight onto the beach. Smooth.]
[ The thing about waking up in Trench is that since Mako opened his damn eyes and stumbled nervelessly onto the beach after being unceremoniously tossed into the sea by those pirates is that everything—literally everything—has been hard.
It's entirely too late for Mako stop the ice melting, so almost as soon as Fern lands, steam puffs up around him as the ice dissipates back into water, sinking back into the sand as Mako skids down into the wet sand beside him. ]
[At least tripping on ice on a beach isn't the worst thing that's happened to him today. Maybe this is a lesson in finally wearing shoes like a normal person?
Nah, this is a freak coincidence and Fern is groaning as he pushes himself up.]
I'm okay, I'm okay. [He's noticing the steam now, and his brows knit together in confusion.] What the heck was that?
[ Wu is coming back with hotdogs for the pair of them only to find his boyfriend crouched on the ground, encased in ice. That's... new ]
Are you okay? What happened?
[ He doesn't want to drop the hotdogs-- that's perfectly good food that he wants to eat-- but he also doesn't want to leave Mako like this. He looks between Mako and their surroundings and Mako again. ]
[ Mako has to do some quick mental math watching Wu juggle those hotdogs: is it more or less embarrassing that he did this to himself? Wu thinks his bending is so cool, and thinks Mako's so capable, and that gives him a bigger boost of confidence most days than he'll ever really admit to.
So it takes a lot of emotional effort to heave a sigh, press his burning palm more carefully against the ice encasing his left wrist, and look up at Wu, still frowning. ]
Pretty sure I did this to myself. My bending's been acting weird since we got here. It's not a big deal, I'll get myself out, I just... have to melt this first. Don't freak out.
[ And, unfortunately, because Mako's still learning how to do this, at the same time as he's pushing heat into the ice around his arm, the ice around his legs is actually growing. ]
But even as Wu watches, the ice is growing, and Wu gasps, and now he sighs softly and catches a townsperson passing by, offering them the hotdogs. They look confused, but take them. Hey, free food. Goodbye, sweet hotdogs. He will get more of them, later.
He drops down next to Mako, but he doesn't really know how to help. ]
What, what are you doing to do this?! I don't want you to freeze! Mako!
She could point out that it's not exactly the most ideal way to greet someone, especially in a situation like this. She could tell him that she's glad to see him - really glad, actually, because even if she and Mako may not have been the closest bosom buddies, he's someone who really seemed to truly understand things about her back in Deerington.
But rather than going for any of that, Ange can't help but fall back on habits that feel familiar and comfortable.
[ Approaching Ange in the first place seemed like the best possible idea: she's clearly sensible. She has a solid head on her shoulders, she's unlikely to exaggerate any of the events that may have happened to her since waking up here, in Mako's eyes, and that means she's probably one of his most reliable sources of information.
Reliable, and snarky. Mako has to stop himself from laughing, but can't quite keep the snort of amusement back. ]

[ Deadpanning right back, although he lifts his notebook a moment later, offering a small smile. ]

[She needed that minute. They'd talked. She'd seen him get broken up with by the Avatar. But it was still taking time.]
[ It takes Mako a few seconds to place the woman in front of him. This is partially because he's still trying to orient himself re: memories, limbs, and the like, and partially because he's still mostly focused on trying to melt the ice around his arm. Turns out when your limbs are only half your own, bending is a lot harder than it should be.
But this face is a hard one to forget. ]
Vira.
[ The name comes back to him along with a flood of images—teasing, fire, last stands, a party at the end of the world. Mako blinks, and the ice begins to retreat from his leg. ]
That's me. Can't usually do anything with ice. Your powers 've been acting up too?
[ Shit, he's supposed to be freeing himself. With a muffled curse, he slams his free palm back into the column of ice around his arm, frowning hard as steam swirls up again. ]
This just happened.
[ That's not entirely true. He'd been trying to warm up the air around him to deal with how cold he seems to be, and then it had warmed too much, and... ]
[She smiled and moved to put a hand on his arm. Unless there was pain, it was best to move slowly, in case there was a chance of harm.]
Easy. If it doesn't hurt, let it go slowly. It will melt gradually. I think powers have been... strange. What happened with mine, I think I knew was coming. But yes, they're not working right.
My magic is gone, actually, but... [She frowned.] My sight is back.
[Given that she was always able to see... she didn't mean tri-ocular focus there.]
[Varian definitely isn't doing so great with the new elemental powers. He doesn't want powers or magic at all, and he's doing his very best to shove the knowledge that he suddenly can as deep down into a little box in his chest as he possibly can. Coming across Mako gives him reason to pause.
That ice is definitely weird. And...well, if anyone understands fire powers, it would be Mako. And he trusts Mako, absolutely and completely. Still, he dithers a little, his arms folding around himself in a self-comforting gesture, thumb and forefinger playing with the hem of his shirt. At least he doesn't bite it on the ice, small favours there. Still, he very much doesn't want to talk about this while knowing he absolutely does.]
[ Mako is slowly getting the hang of the ice thing. In addition to having frozen the beach and part of a wave, he'd also managed to freeze his own feet to the sand, and he's currently glaring down at them, annoyed and confused. He tugs uselessly at his foot, curses quietly when it doesn't immediately come free, and looks up at Varian.
Despite everything, he's very, very glad to see Varian. If there's one person here with a level head on their shoulders—one person who might have some explanation Mako hasn't thought of for everything that's happened—it's Varian, and Mako knows how important it was to him to make it here. This is his chance at a new life, the life he was looking for.
He softens, just a little, and pulls his foot free from rapidly-retreating ice without thinking about it too hard. ]
[Varian hates not being able to provide answers here. He's used to being able to at least make a good hypothesis on everything that happens to him. He can figure out how to round off the square pegs to get them to fit in the holes. He's good at that.
But this has thrown him a curveball. None of this makes sense. Maybe if all of them were the same, he could figure something out, but they're not Ange and Fern are glittering, Wu did... fucking something in the caves. Nothing is making sense and he's feeling pretty damn lost. This is his new life, and he doesn't regret coming here, but by god he wishes he could understand what was happening to him.
He shuffles his feet. If he had his alchemy on hand, he might be able to get Mako out of this. Whip up a salt solution or something. But his supplies are still missing. ]
...Have you run into Wu yet? [He can't see Wu keeping this quiet. Then, after a moment, curious and not judging: ] ...Did you make the ice happen?
[ That sword almost gets him, and Yuri's glad for the call out. He drives his elbow down into the thing's arm, making it drop its sword. He manages to catch it, grinning broadly because now, now he can really fight. But he doesn't use the sword right away, and instead kicks the thing back before twisting around and slashing at the monster Mako's fighting. He figures he has a good few seconds before the other one gets back up. ]
[ Thank the spirits Yuri did, because Mako's doing his best here but they're in an enclosed space made largely of wood and he can't just let loose like he's used to. At least he can lean on pro-bending, on the kind of quick moves that wouldn't actually hurt an opponent, to land a hit. Yuri slashes, and the fish-thing stumbles and Mako whirls, slamming a fire-laced roundhouse into its gut to slam it into the wood. It shrieks, bleeding profusely, but Mako sweeps fire at it before it can get up and whirls, panting, with his fists still flaming to look at the other one. ]
You wanna try me? Bring it. I'll fry you.
[ The pirate, apparently, does not in fact want to be fried, because it stumbles away, leaving the path to the door clear for them both. ]
[ As if he's moving faster than light, Yuri whips past the fish guy who was in fact fleeing. Well, he could tell his friends. Yuri's used to having to clear a place out, and monsters get no quarter, even ones who seem to have some kind of plan like these ones.
He impales the thing before it even knows what's happening, and Yuri pulls the sword out, whipping back at the other one and stabbing his sword into its throat. It gurgles and collapses back. He twirls his sword with a grin and turns to Mako. ]

[Varian hates not being able to provide answers here. He's used to being able to at least make a good hypothesis on everything that happens to him. He can figure out how to round off the square pegs to get them to fit in the holes. He's good at that.
But this has thrown him a curveball. None of this makes sense. Maybe if all of them were the same, he could figure something out, but they're not Ange and Fern are glittering, Wu did... fucking something in the caves. Nothing is making sense and he's feeling pretty damn lost. This is his new life, and he doesn't regret coming here, but by god he wishes he could understand what was happening to him.
He shuffles his feet. If he had his alchemy on hand, he might be able to get Mako out of this. Whip up a salt solution or something. But his supplies are still missing. ]
...Have you run into Wu yet? [He can't see Wu keeping this quiet. Then, after a moment, curious and not judging: ] ...Did you make the ice happen?

Whoa!
[ That sword almost gets him, and Yuri's glad for the call out. He drives his elbow down into the thing's arm, making it drop its sword. He manages to catch it, grinning broadly because now, now he can really fight. But he doesn't use the sword right away, and instead kicks the thing back before twisting around and slashing at the monster Mako's fighting. He figures he has a good few seconds before the other one gets back up. ]

[ The pirate, apparently, does not in fact want to be fried, because it stumbles away, leaving the path to the door clear for them both. ]

[ As if he's moving faster than light, Yuri whips past the fish guy who was in fact fleeing. Well, he could tell his friends. Yuri's used to having to clear a place out, and monsters get no quarter, even ones who seem to have some kind of plan like these ones.
He impales the thing before it even knows what's happening, and Yuri pulls the sword out, whipping back at the other one and stabbing his sword into its throat. It gurgles and collapses back. He twirls his sword with a grin and turns to Mako. ]
