While Yuri finds the occurrence something novel and interesting, Blue is more apprehensive. Kind of funny, that: fear of the unknown is part of why he and those like him are ostracized and hunted down! But then again, he is still human in a lot of ways, isn't he? And it's only human...
"'Giving us'..." He trails off, mouth pursing into a thin-lined frown. "That...doesn't make sense. How can something like that be imbued? Implants? Injections...?"
Magic isn't real, but genetic alteration certainly is.
"No clue. Maybe it happened at the same time when I became a squid," you know, casual. But hey, if this world can change his body, why not give him powers.
He continues his trek up the sand toward the boardwalk, like he didn't say anything out of the ordinary. He's just going to go with it, squid and flames and seeing this kid's memories and all.
"You remember what happened before you got here? I really don't know how I got here."
When he...what? Blue is taken aback by the casual way Yuri speaks of the most incredible, absurd things. It means he hesitates in place for a moment, at risk of being left in the proverbial dust before he can move to try and catch up. It's hard, because without an arm to hang onto, he's got to try and keep his balance.
...Which...isn't as hard as it was earlier, somehow. He's caught up sooner than he expects to, so he needs a few seconds more to consider the question Yuri poses.
"I don't," Blue admits. "I...I haven't been able to clear that fog for myself. Though...I know there is something there.
"Only...something in me is afraid to know it, I think."
After a few steps, he realizes something further.
"But...it may be similar to something in your experience. If what I'm feeling is true."
"Maybe my stopovers with the pirates and the crabs were good for something. Brain fog cleared ages ago," Yuri slows down just a little to let him catch up.
"It was pretty weird. I don't blame you for being scared of thinking about it, but I'm pretty sure it's true. At least, it was for me. Pretty weird, being a squid."
He glances over at Blue, considering him for a moment. "What did you experience?"
Admittedly, part of him is apprehensive to think too much on it - that perhaps, in trying, he may be drawn back to Yuri's thoughts simply by the merit of having a thread of shared experience.
But what good will that do?
Blue exhales, taking some time to quietly think on it as they walk, slowing to a stop as they get too close to the boardwalk. The background noise of the minds drawing near is getting a bit distracting.
"...Fire," he replies at last. "Fire...and then water. I don't know how, but...it went from one, and then the other."
[it's heartbreaking in a different way, hearing Flynn struggle with this information. for one thing, it's not his burden to bear, because it's clear that this human has nothing to do with the system that's done Blue and other Mu harm. Blue's done him a slight without even meaning to - something in him failed, or has changed, making such a thing happen so easily, without his permission...
it hurts, too, because Blue wants to know a world where what Flynn says is true and the norm. it must be what a future in Terra could be.
Blue's eyes are weary, wary and tired, showing more of the age than any other part of him can.]
You should let me go. What I've done...may happen again. Touch opens doors to the heart and mind.
[ Maybe it's a future here. Maybe it's a future in Flynn's own world, or at least, it's the future he's working so hard to create: a world without exploitation, where people aren't empowered to abuse others simply because of the power they were born into. It's an entrenched system with deep and stubborn roots, but Flynn's trying.
Who knows what kinds of structures exist on these shores? There is, inevitably, more work to be done. Some part of Flynn knows that there's work here to be done, too, that there's a reason he and Yuri washed up together. Maybe there's a reason Blue is here as well after going through so much.
He looks so much older, the way he's looking at Flynn right now.
Flynn nods, and lets go of his wrist, though his hand still hovers nearby. ]
So that is... an ability of yours. To broadcast thoughts that way?
[ Flynn's voice is soft, not quite with sympathy but certainly with understanding. ]
My best friend can make fire with his hands now, and his... blood freezes? It's all very strange, and certainly not something that was true before all of this. If you're feeling that something has changed, it is very likely that's true.
[Blue lifts his gaze, peering at him. those peculiar notions tied to the bright bond of the mention of best friend are enticing, but he keeps himself from reaching for them with his thoughts. if restraint's entirely out the window, he's in for a great deal of trouble, after all...]
[Tsume began to stand up slowly, limbs shaking a little from the effort. He does have his pride after all.]
I can get my own food--
[And then he collapses back in the sand again. That swim took more out of him than he's willing to admit. His eyes move up to meet Blue's, a look of woe upon his furry face.]
--But if you want to get me something, I won't complain.
[Blue's eyes crinkle with a mix of empathy and warmth before he nods and turns away, making a slow and careful trek to the boardwalk. the more he walks, the easier it becomes, but his physiology still doesn't give him much stamina to work with, so care must be taken.
all that to say the wolf gets plenty of time to himself to rest and recollect before the Mu makes a return with a tray laden with a couple hot dogs and soup bowl full of water - something Blue has to take his time in setting down lest he drop the whole thing in shifting his balance.
he does so closer to the wolf this time, more certain he's safe to do so at this point. he sits on his knees in the sand, his hands at rest in his lap.]
[With Blue off to get him some food, Tsume sets about getting himself back to rights. He lays there until some of his strength comes back, allowing him to get further away from the shoreline. He lets his damp fur begin to dry and makes a few futile efforts to get the sand out of it.
When that fails, he sits there and patiently awaits the return of his savior. His eyes light up when he sees Blue return with food and water. Without a word, he immediately chomps down on the food, eagerly drinking the water. He hadn't realized how parched the sea water had made him until just this moment. After he finishes, he looks up at Blue.]
Thanks. [And then after a moment's pause, he adds on: ] Why did you help me in the first place?
[Blue remains stationary throughout, just taking in the sight. there aren't many animals left in the world Blue's had a chance to see - and certainly none as large and intelligent as this one here, so it's quietly fascinating, and makes it more and more clear that he's far from what he's known.
when the wolf looks to him, Blue's thoughtful, faraway gaze refocuses and fixes on him.
why? he tilts his head just slightly.]
You needed help. Hearing you out there...I couldn't ignore something like that.
[but that makes him wonder if the same isn't true were things in reverse.]
[ The body Blue finds on the shore is long and lanky, wrapped in sopping wet robes. He's covered in bite marks -- he's definitely run into the crabs. A lot of them. At least he's not still a squid.
At the contact, Palamedes stirs and blinks open his eyes. He fidgets with his glasses a little and starts to sit up. Then he hears the voice in his head, and that really gets his attention. ]
Possibly. Although my magic doesn't work on the living.
[Blue withdraws his hand when the stranger tenses up from the telepathy. beyond that, though, he remains knelt beside him, watching with wide, searching eyes.]
You think there's such a thing?
[or does he know it is? if that's the case, then they're less alike than Blue first sensed.]
[ He starts dusting some of the sand off of his robes. Given how wet they are, it's more or less a lost cause, but he's going to at least try. ]
My House prefers to think of it as a science. I suppose it depends on how you study it. [ he looks over his glasses at the kneeling man, curious. ] You have heard of necromancy, haven't you?
[ it's only the basis for an entire galactic empire. ]
[ never even heard the word? that's surprising, given how far-reaching the Nine Houses are. Palamedes doesn't much care for intergalactic politics, but even he knows that most people have heard of necromancy. Which means this person must be from...somewhere else. Somewhere very far away.
Luckily, Palamedes genuinely enjoys talking about this stuff. ]
I'm Palamedes. Necromancy is -- well, generally speaking, it's the manipulation of life energy and death energy. Some necromancers work on bone, others on flesh, and others on spirits. I've studied all three branches to some degree, although I specialize in the energy found in objects. Ghosts-in-the-thing, if you like.
[Blue's mind reaches a bit, hoping to glean a bit more detail from the notion spoken aloud - as much to inform himself as it is to give the child less to speak to.]
It is...not so strange. Many here...recall just as little.
[There is more, Blue may find. Jumbles of images - a sickly woman propped up on carefully arranged straw in the corner of a stable, sword practice with a group of older boys who appear to be related, sitting in the wind on a rocky hillside, moving carefully through the halls of a house at night to pass unseen by bedrooms.
But as for which of them is last, the boy's not sure. And more of his attention is taken up evaluating his surroundings and companion.]
[It makes sense, that there are others. He could feel their presence, back in the waves. There could be a lot of them.
Where are they all from, he wonders. He's never seen this man before. The idea that they could all be from different places has a definite appeal, although it has one major drawback as well.]
