[Varian's really not doing great right now, his eyes are wide and unfocused- he could be considered to be staring at the burning crabs, but he's looking somewhere beyond that. Panic is well and truly setting in, the air still hot around him, like something teetering on the verge of exploding.
Varian doesn't understand how he created fire but he knows he doesn't want to keep doing it. He just wants to push this as far in the back of his mind as possible and not think about it at all. He's looking desperately for an exit, a way out of the caves and more importantly, out of this situation.
He catches a shaft of light and points at it.]
Look! We- we can get out there! That's gotta be better than this. [There's a pleading, desperate shift to his tone.] We- let's just go. We can move faster than the crabs. You... you just need to help me there, okay?
[ Well, it's better than Wu's plan, which was to make Varian firebend, but clearly that isn't happening any time soon. He lets out a cry as a crab starts climbing up his arms, and he throws them off with as much strength as he has before he grabs Varian by the arm and tries to haul him up with his arm around his shoulders. ]
We can try! We can, we can get there. We can get out--
[ The panic isn't ebbing at all. In fact, it's growing, because the fire was a boon, it was hope, and now Wu is pretty sure they're going to get eaten by carnivorous crabs and he's not ready for that.
He holds back a shaky sob, doing his best to drag Varian up-- but that's when something strange happens, at least for Varian.
Wu's being taken back to the last time he had to escape, with little hope of succeeding, when he was hurried out of the palace in Ba Sing Se the day that Zaheer killed Queen Hou-Ting. He was terrified then, too, and trying his best to be quiet, to hold back his tears, to do what the Dai Li told him and get out of the city. The scene flashes in Varian's mind, from Wu's perspective of being shushed and hidden. He peered around them to see chaos, to see flames licking ancient tapestries, to hear shouts of "the Queen is dead!"
Then the scene abruptly ends as Wu takes another shaky breath ]
Swords aren't an area Varian is very knowledgeable in (the fact he called a sabre a sword at all was probably a big clue there), but he spends a lot of time with Fern, who fills their home with the damn things, so Varian has gained vague interest by osmosis if nothing else. But it's what Manabu has to say about the sabre which really has his attention.
Naturally, he reaches out to touch it - in the awkward way of someone who blatantly is not used to handling blades, cooing a little.
"A gravity sabre? So... does that mean it has some sort of effect on gravity itself? Or some sort of other effect on external forces?"
"Honestly?" Manabu squints, mouth tugging on one side. "I...I don't really know. Never shot one before."
And as far as the 'saber' part goes? It's not even sharp!
"If the stories are right, a legendary engineer designed them and gave them to the notorious outlaws Captain Harlock and Emeraldas - along with custom dragoons which firepower no one's been able to match since.
"Not sure what the odds are we're running into those people, though..." But if their weapons are here, who knows?
Varian quietly works on cleaning the wound. He wishes he had some of his alchemy on him- if nothing else he had a pretty good painkiller to help in a pinch. But he has nothing. He hasn't felt this helpless in a while and he doesn't care for it one bit. He starts wrapping up the wound once it's clean and dry, glancing up to catch the pincer movements.
"Oh...right. The crabs. Yeah, they- they got me too," he hesitates. "...Is your blood weirder than normal? I...genuinely don't know if this is regular for you or not."
Maul patiently allows Varian to clean and bind his wound. Honestly, Maul doesn't feel all that different about it one way or another, but he knows it'll make Varian feel like he's accomplishing something. So he lets him do it.
He glances at the mention of the color of his blood. While he hasn't given it too much thought, he's now beginning to realize that something is definitely wrong with it. His normal blood color was a red that was a little brighter than the color human blood was, given his was more oxygenated from having two hearts than a human being's was. It definitely isn't supposed to be a green color that reminds him of Dathomirian witch magick.
He points to the blood that has been cleaned off and shakes his head. Nope, that is wrong. He points to a section of his skin that's red. That's what it is supposed to look like instead.
Wh...what? Really? I've never heard about it before. Is it- is it some kind of war? I'm not sure how the beartrap thing affects the results of it?
[Because there's clearly a lot of gravitas being put onto this. If it's something that can shape human history and someone (eagles????) have to win it...well, that suggests war to Varian. But how does Charlie's leg fit into all of this?]
It means it'll stop it from working. And that's... that seems like a lot to go through and still be alive?
But yeah, it's practically a war. Two different fractions going at it. That kinda thing.
[He meant 'factions'. Be nice and don't correct him, he thinks he sounds smart there.]
... You really think so? I guess people say that a lot. It's always "oh my god Charlie, that was poisonous!" or "how did you survive that fall?" or "I can't believe you ate magnets and didn't explode your guts!". Things like that.

[Before he can say exactly where they met, the wave pushes them down into the water, shoving them past the rocks and through into a cave system. Varian breaks the surface, gasping for breath- more memories are untangling and panic is setting in as he looks desperately for the man, waiting for him to break into the cave.]
[Usagi might have her hands full, but Varian still has one to use. With the arm he's not using to lean on her, he reaches out to swat at the crab to get it off her. It latches onto this hand instead, and he yelps, flailing it about a little to get it off. The crab gets tossed into a nearby wall, and pale blue blood forms at the cut it made in his hand. Moments later, that blood freezes, leaving ice crystals at his palm. Varian frowns at it.]
Oh, I can accept that magic and science both exist. It's just that science is better.
[Varian, Luz is standing right there. She uses magic. She's used magic to save your ass more than once. Can you not. ]
Oh yeah, we've got a great garden, I'm sure she'll love it. And I'm fine, the recliner is only there for when I pass out from working.
[Which is a lot more often than his tone suggests. He blushes a little, clearing his throat. Nothing more scandalous happens than two sad teenager boys clinging to one another to try and stave off their collected nightmares, but he's still gonna be awkward about it.]

This is definitely a rip-off. If I'd actually spent any money on this venture, I'd want a refund. Also clothes. And my leg.

He remembers Vespas being around town. Hazzah, a modern item he understands, that in itself is a miracle. But he could, indeed, make a pretty cool one if he so desired. God, he hopes this place has a junkyard like Deerington did. That was great in helping him find parts to build stuff.
"Huh, that's pretty cool. Probably inconvenient if you're trying to avoid being murdered by locals, though," he's at least aware a lot of humans are far less...collected than he is about non-humans. "Ad yeah, it's rain. There's a whole water cycle- also science."
He has so much science to teach you, Luca. So much. He lets out a soft 'heh' sound.

[Varian could relate. His life was great now, but it decidedly wasn't. His past would be a spectre he would never be able to outrun back home, no matter what good he did for the Kingdom. He doesn't plan to outrun his past here but it's a little...easier. Not everyone knows who he is and what he's done. ]
Yeah. But I had the opportunity to make a semi-informed decision about coming here. I got the time to really think it over. I have people here I love a great deal who aren't in my home world. My boyfriend's one of them. I don't want to leave them, so I came here.

[That had been the real kicker. Or not, because it's hard to kick when you only have one leg. He snorts softly. ]
Of course, it was messed up. It was Deerington. That was like... that place's Modus Operandi. Just give us vague nothing's to work on and then be "surprise, what you did actually effected an entire dimensional plane of existence which you get to live in now!"
