[The last few months had given Mukuro a lot to think about- especially with regard to her own death back home. One part still didn't make any sense to her:

What had she done wrong? Why had Junko killed her?

Reviewing the strategy from a recent battle at home. I want to understand the rational for the decisions taken.

A soldier is engaged in a stealth/undercover mission. However, they have made a mistake that risks the operation's success, and have not realised their error.

The mission commander is in a position to eliminate the operative to preserve their mission, without exposing themselves in the process.

Is that course of action reasonable? To put it another way- under what circumstances would you consider sacrificing one of your own men to ensure a mission's success or to prevent it's failure?

if the operative knew that termination was one of the possible consequences of failure, and its made clear to them, then the matter is consensual between the operative and their commander. theres nothing to discuss there, the matter is understood.

Agreed. If they were warned on the possibility of elimination should they ever let their guard down or fail in carrying out orders then. Yes.

The only part that remains to be understood is why then and where the point of failure was.

thats for the commander to decide. and trust me, its not a decision a good commander will take lightly. skilled soldiers of any kind are a resource too valuable to waste, so when one of your options for a failed mission is to kill that soldier, then you need to make damn sure its your last resort.

I don't know if I'd call myself valuable.

A last resort. Maybe it was. Until the point of failure is identified, then working out if there were any other options is more difficult.

What potential cost do you think outweighs the life of an operative?

if me or tokugawa ever had to send an operative into a "failure equals death" mission, what was usually at stake was intelligence that would preserve the lives of the rest of our armies. a single operative weighed against the lives of entire units worth of soldiers isn't much.

It was intelligence that would risk my commander's life.

That was more important than what happened to me.

the commander's life? i suppose that makes sense, to weigh on an individual level. any soldier is prepared to die to preserve the life of their commander.

i guess the issue here is you dont know how you failed your mission, right? i dont think i need to tell you this, but the only person who can answer that is your commander, not any of us.

Exactly. Her life is more important than mine was.

...You're right. She'd be the only one who could tell me what I did wrong. I guess that's why so many people are saying things like how she betrayed me or how what happened was wrong.

But she's not here. I'm on standby for when she's brought here.

That's the problem. I've been here months and it keeps weighing on me. Why did I die? What did I do wrong?
