In light of recent events upon the outpost it's clear that there are a number of us who are suffering the after-effects of torture. You all have my utmost sympathies - I have witnessed such things before and I will offer the same services here that I gave to my dear friend when he was put under a similar duress.

[ A duress that Durham himself instigated, yes, but that's another matter entirely. Or so Durham tells himself. ]

Whilst those who have been subjected to a torture most terrible are undoubtedly brave, it would not be thought of an act of cowardice to wish to rid oneself of the memory of such a trauma. Torture does not end just because one has been released from the cell; there are the lingering effects of anxious melancholies, exhausted spirits, weakened nerves... to say nothing of restless sleep.

You need not bear these memories as a millstone and for those that wish it I will gladly relieve you of such a burdensome weight. You may find me in my cabin - the eighth room upon the eighth passenger deck. Ask for Thomas Sutton - [ A thoughtful pause, then he adds: ] - or perhaps it would do better if you were to ask for Durham. Either way, I shall endeavour to do my utmost to help those that are prepared to ask for it.

[ Another pause, longer this time, and then Durham picks up again. This time his voice is harder, cooler; this is a matter of business, rather than a favour. ]

And while I am here I may as well announce this too - Oxford. Your Durham has disembarked. In light of this I propose a parlé. I would request that we meet un-armed but as both of us possess weapons that are not so easily cast aside, might I simply ask that it be under a white flag of truce? I do not know how many of your fellows remain on board but I suppose they may attend as well.

[ And here Alayne peers with a curiosity so open that it might worry another person, given the nature of the man's offer. But she is a girl plagued with terrible memories, some of which she wishes away in the night and others to which she clings so fiercely it makes the whole of her ache. ]

You— you can do such a thing? Rid a man of unhappy memories?

[ The video function is a bit of a novelty, but for the sake of a distressed looking young girl that looks so painfully like his own dear sister Durham would move mountains. The discovery of how to operate the video feed is nothing in that respect. ]

I can. [ Softly, he adds: ] And I consider the ability a service that far outweighs the purpose that it was initially designed to serve in both kindness and consideration.

[ Alayne gazes intently at the offered face, her brow pinching momentarily in concentration. It is as if she intends to divine something of his character simply by gathering the details of his face — an exercise that she does regularly but normally with much more finesse. Her voice tapers off distractedly as her eyes move back and forth across the screen. ]

Memories are a dangerous thing. They can make a man — or unmake him. [ When finally her focus returns to his eyes, her mouth sets thinly with what seems to be determination. ] Is it painful? [ Then, a little less certainly (her eyes grow wide): ] Does it hurt?

[ For the most part, though he listens in, Petyr doesn't make any active effort to drop in upon his daughter's conversations. It is not his place to make her decisions for her (though sometimes — most of the time — he loses sight of that). He can't quite help himself, this time around, and there's a pinch to his brow when his image flickers to life. ]

Do not tell me you mean to consider it.

[ She very rarely is of the habit to make a decision without her father's approval. Though Alayne has grown bolder and more willful during her time aboard the Tranquility, she still holds no illusions as to where that boldness comes from — a truth that she holds in her heart happily. Even though there is no throne here, no obvious game in which to play, there is no argument as to who remains the better player of the both of them. And so, more often than not, she defers to Petyr's better judgment. In this, however—

Alayne frowns slightly. ] You disapprove.

[ The face he offers her is stripped of any pretense; there's an idealistic determination to help, and help in the only way he knows how. Perhaps, if Alayne knew a little more of Durham's history, she might have been able to deduce the underlying motive for such a determination but to the uninformed there is only tenacity and resolution. ]

I have seen more men suffer with a foul memory than without one. [ A shake of the head. ] The only pain is perhaps in reliving the memory itself; it must be thought of in depth before it can be removed.

[ To be fair, Tony shouldn't even offer his opinion, but he can see how the others don't approve and it bothers him. (It's her decision if she wants to forget, it's her memories that she has to live with. Not theirs. They can't understand it.) So he rubs at the back of his neck before he finally does speak up, making sure no one can see this. ]

Do they keep you awake? [ Because generalities and beating around the bush aside, she's hardly the only one who thinks of times without memories that drag you down. He may not be family (not really) but he asks anyway. ]
