[When the broadcast begins, the center of attention is a young man's gloved hands and the toy figure they hold, approximately thirteen centimeters tall and brushed with shining metallic white paint. Protruding from large armored shoulders embedded with green gems is a leathery-looking vinyl cape that hangs low enough to reach adjustable feet. When pressed, a switch resting behind a horned helmet triggers movement of the arms: a rigid up-and-down chopping motion.]
I was alright with building these things when I first got here, but now that they've started to model them after Escaflowne...
[To say Van sounds exasperated is an understatement, but even so, he doesn't appear to be in any hurry to dispose of the figure. Rather than treat it with any sort of disrespect, the toy is set aside in favor of collecting the phone, the camera positioned in his hands to capture his disapproving frown, no doubt expected by those who have come to know him.]
What I'm trying to say is that I'm looking for new work. I'm good with a bow and arrow, better with a sword, and if there are people who want to learn or need protecting...
[He doesn't feel good about suggesting they pay him for any of that, but he can't very well live off the generosity of others, now can he? And he's not happy at present doing something he feels serves no greater purpose. This is really the only option he has.]
I'm also looking for an armorer. And someone who knows their way around large... [He pauses, clearly searching for the right word, his face screwing up with concentration before, albeit with obvious dissatisfaction, he settles upon the only commonly accepted descriptor he knows.] ...large robots.
Mine needs some repairs. Potentially some improvements.

I can take a look at it, if you'd like. I've never dealt with the kind of armour you'd use with a sword and shield, but I know metal plating. Systems, too, especially if it's flight capable.
I'd recommend Hunk, too. He has a lot of large vehicle experience and expertise. He and Lance have a robot here too, though they're smaller here than they were at home.

I need to find a way to improve response time. Guymelefs are big and heavy so they move slower than anything with less mass might, but there's a bit of a delay between my actions and the melef itself. If I can reduce that, I can use Escaflowne more efficiently.

Maybe the only way it would carry much influence is in the one way I can't do anything about, because by this world's standards I'm too young to take part in politics. [A never ending source of annoyance for Van.] I think my being unregistered might also be a problem, though.

So, they're having you make little models, and they wanted one of your armor? I have a feeling that isn't exactly legal, if you didn't license it. It's especially in bad taste if you're their employee.

Fighting for what you believe in, that's definitely worthwhile. But as with all fights, there's a time and a place, and neither is right now. There's...a lot I need to learn, first.
As for this... [He frowns at the toy in question and shakes his head.] I didn't give anybody permission, but...it's not as though it's really Escaflowne, you know? I mean, the proportion ratio is off, and they didn't even include the sword or make it transformable.
[Still, as a toy meant for children, Van isn't as against its production as he could be. He can't help thinking how Merle would have loved something like this, or how as a boy even he would have loved it. But putting them together himself? That's not so enjoyable. It's not...what he's good at or what he's meant to be doing. Especially when the toy is modeled after his guymelef and he spends more time wanting to point out all the things they've gotten wrong with the design than he does actually assembling the damn things.]
I guess what I mean is, it's harmless. It's just a toy. But it's not something I feel comfortable making and distributing myself.

Either way, you aren't going to learn anything by putting it off. Especially if you're only avoiding a metaphorical fight for a literal one, given your choice of industry. The commercial options for that field, including the one that's already approached you, tend to be unsavory.
