I just wonder if now that this post is made with good intentions if this just allows people to go onto 4shared and search for the files? (Considering there's a very select few that is listed as a do not share request.)

Just curious about this.

No, I don't think so. The post has been deleted and I don't remember the exact words but it was pretty much:

"Fuck it. I'm tired of looking for fics for hours and hours and now that I've found them, I don't give a shit if they're not supposed to be shared. I'm sharing them anyway. You guys better grab them while you can before the moderators delete this."

That's a paraphrase, but not by much. The only fics she uploaded were a half-dozen or so of Jan's, one of niquita_gia's, and the Gus one of Carly's. There are a lot of people with 4Shared or Megaupload or SendSpace accounts who offer their links when someone is looking for a fic. We don't have any problem with that. In fact, there's a Tag named "personal DL link" or something like that.

This poster today was purposely and purposefully trying to create drama and had to create a new LJ just so she'd have a user name to post from. She may disagree with the policy here about not sharing if an author asks, and she's welcome to her opinion. She can go create her own comm if she wants, she can't pull her shit here, which she knew, and she did anyway.

People can and have gone to public file storage places for fic and music all the time. I go looking for songs on occasion. That's not something we can or would even try to control. We can only do that here, where we've been asked to do so.

Maybe I failed to clarify my point. They could do that, but if no one has not uploaded them, they will obviously fail. However, knowing that someone did upload them, then yes, they can search and find them. (Kind of, this is advertising what the person did in the first place, giving everyone opportunities to go look? You can't control what people do with this information, but I feel the less information about it the better if we are keeping the rule.) No disrespect intended, I think you guys do a marvelous job here, but....

I don't know, that was just my thought when I first saw this post was that now we had information on just who the author's could possibly be, where to do a search from, and that they were bulk uploaded...so easier to just find one random one and access the whole folder.

Well, actually, no, I don't think it's advertising at all. Here's the thing. Those fics are available out there in the webz for anyone with the patience to find them. They always have been. Another point is, unless you know the file storage account holder, how are you going to remove them? You can't. That's just the way it is. We're doing only what we've been asked o do here. Giving out the info about our decision is for the general knowledge of the comm...and any would be people wanting to start trouble. Do it, you get banned.

That's as far as I'm willing to go for an author. If they want to go chase down where their fic is, more power to them. Our rule is simple: a writer asks us to tell people not to share their fic. That's what we do. That's it. Someone violates that, we delete the post and ban the person. Problem is, that post was up for several hours before we got it down. Do you honestly think that people didn't download the fic while the links were visible? Trust me, they did. Can I prove it? Of course not. But I've been around a long time, in many fandoms, and I know how this works.

Haha, I guess I'm not a very patient person or willing to go to extreme lengths just for fanfic. There's always been one that I've been curious about that

jans_intentions wrote, but I've already discovered that apparently it was rewritten as original? (Someone told me I should just read the new version it was close to the same.) It sort of turned me off the idea after that. The idea of Brian/Justin great, the idea that their names could so easily just be renamed and suddenly they are different people makes me wonder if they even had the same personalities as their namesakes or were just cardboard characters that were named Brian and Justin. (I read one fic that was going to be re-done as an original and kept finding myself go, 'Nothing they do or say actually relates to their personality in the first place, why wasn't this original to begin with? Completely different fandom, though, but the idea is the same.)

Yeah, I know it could be considered bad!fic, but on the other hand is the fact that really good quality writing should not be used in that shape or form. Too many fandoms I'm in lately have had writers make fanfic with an idea they have with characters people adore just to get their feelings on the idea. Then they yank it off the net and then sell it as their original fic while many are going, 'Didn't I read something just like that not too long ago?!?'

I think there should be a new name for that, and not just bad!fic. Because bad!fic to me is a lot worse!

Right. I was really talking about bad!fic that's only just fanfic. Just crappy fanfic. IMO. In someone ~else's opinion, it might be their favorite fanfic evAR!

I've heard about people doing what you describe, though. Again, I think the word we might be looking for is plagiarism. Or at least a second cousin to.

LOL, omg, I almost forgot to comment on the interchangeable QAF-Buffy-LOTF fic! Um... going to guess... Brian/Justin = Spike/Buffy = uh........ Aragorn/Legolas???

Make that LOTR. LOTF would be Lord of the Flies, lol. Though, who knows, maybe they used their super durable all-purpose fics for that fandom, too!

Funny, what caught my eye was the review of A Thousand Beautiful Things, one of my Top Three Harry/Draco fics ever. The reviewer was spot on. I never read the first one discussed, so...but yeah, I pretty much agree with the assessment. I LOATHE unrealistic D/s fic. If you're gonna write it, RESEARCH IT FIRST.

I haven't read the book so I can't offer an opinion either way.

An author in another fandom, BBM perhaps, took down a fanfic, changed a few details and published it as original. When it came out that the work was recycled fanfic, the reviewers (and judging from some of the reader comments on the reviewer's blog sites, the readers) were pissed that they'd been duped and fed recycled fanfic.

I dunno, but the fact that this author here is so adamant that her fic be kept away from everyone while she publishes original versions of it, leads me to believe that she doesn't want the reviewers (and readers) to find out. I wonder if the publisher would have bought those books if they'd known they were previously viewed fanfic.

Oh god. I so much agree with that. There's a reason I was never interesting in reading her fic... :P Also, I have little respect for people who recycle fanfic into "original" stories... Like, none at all. But that's just me. ;)

Lol, yes! Mastering Toby. I've not read it, exactly, but I do remember reading a RPS fic she wrote once called Educating Gale (or Teaching Gale? something like that, lol). I'm almost shocked at how little it seems she changed that one.
