I think this is correct. I'm reasonably certain that when I drove east in 2005, when leaving Utah I passed through Colorado then swung north into Nebraska, going through Lincoln, rather than continuing east through Kansas and Missouri. I'm reasonably sure I did not ever actually enter Michigan. However, I'm not 100% certain whether in 2002, we passed through the southern portion of Arkansas or the northern part of Louisiana.

I can definitely remember that I must have passed through the Carolinas on 95, when we went to Disney World when I was a kid. I can recall being in FL, but not most of the drive.

Likewise, on the road... to me, you only count as having visited a state if you've spent more than a few hours there, in a non-airport location more than half an hour from the interstate. Otherwise... well, as I said, airports are airports, and the interstate is the interstate.
