Last night I watched Mr. Brooks with Kevin Costner, William Hurt, and Demi Moore, which I quite liked. I'd meant to see it in the theater but didn't get around to it. Kevin Costner as Mr. Brooks plays a pleasant, happily married successful businessman who happens to be a serial killer. It was nicely done and I enjoyed it a lot.

Then I watched Spider starring Ralph Fiennes and directed by David Cronenberg, based on Patrick McGrath's (that's pronounced McGraw) novel of the same name. McGrath wrote the script. I went in knowing it was going to be depressing even though I didn't remember the book all that well. It was tough to watch. Fiennes was excellent as the mumbling former mental patient who moves into what seems to be a halfway house/boarding house for the mentally ill. It wasn't fun and I can't say I enjoyed it except for the acting. Oh and for Gabriel Byrne who plays the Fiennes character's father... I thought of watching the other movie I have (The Prince and the Showgirl) to cheer me up but it was too late. I started proofreading The Del Rey Book of SF &F instead.

"Fun" is not a word I associate with David Cronenberg movies, although I do love David Cronenberg movies a lot. Go figure.

Oh, I agree :-) I usually love them too. This one I didn't love.

I didn't care for Spider, though I love just about everything else Cronenberg has done.

I've loved A History of Violence and Eastern Promises and most of his earlier films. Just not this one.

I'm a huge advocate for Netflix. I used to always forget a movie title that sounded good, now all I have to do is remember long enough to dump it in my queue.

Guess I'm in the minority -- I loved</> "Spider", and not just because Fiennes was showing everyone else what acting means again, either...

That's ok, Mikal. I thought it was a very good movie, I just didn't enjoy it...and I enjoy lots of depressing/violent/grim movies....I'm not sure why I didn't enjoy it.

Well, admittedly I've got copies of "'Night, Mother", "Frances" and "The Sweet Hereafter", all of which I loved, none of which I've ever watched again because they were too freaking depressing... (Come to think of it, I haven't rewatched my copy of "Spider" either...heh.)

The Del Rey book of SF & F looks wonderful, but I wanted to thank you for these movie reviews and comments. It's such a handy thing you're doing, and fun to read, too. I've started a little "Ellen list" :)

Hi Kara,
You're welcome. It's more fun than I thought it would be ;-)

We watched "Mr. Brooks" last night and loved it. A great movie.

"Spider" was also a great film, but not one we ever plan on watching again. Too depressing and disturbing.
