Still in mourning

I can't even. I just can't even.
I know that there are many people in this country who feel angry, left behind, ignored, trampled on, betrayed by their representatives in government. I know that both parties have done a shit job addressing their very real concerns. I know that many of us are desperate for some kind of change, some kind of shift in government, a return to its proper nature of being by, for, and of the people. And I am so, so, so sorry that we as a country didn't have a better choice last Tuesday (*koff*Bernie*koff*).
But that so many people were willing to sacrifice dignity, courtesy, tolerance, civility, and common human decency in an effort to get that change... that, I cannot understand. And that racists and bigots have the apparent sanction of our president-elect is absolutely shameful.
If "making America great again" requires jettisoning the very things that underpin a civilized society, then I don't want that particular flavor of greatness.

Date: 2016-11-14 12:48 am (UTC)I was a Bernie supporter, but I also believe that Hillary would have been an outstanding president: qualified, experienced, capable, compassionate, intelligent, dedicated. Perfect? of course not. Did I have some problems with her? Of course (I have problems with Obama, too, and he's my hero). But a bad choice? I don't think she was at all.
Regardless. Doesn't matter now.
The entire country is well and thoroughly screwed, and this goes for the bulk of T's supporters, too. They just don't know it yet. Even if by some miracle we get out of this catastrophe with basic Constitutional rights intact and no war (and I by no means believe we will), I am heartbroken about what we will lose anyway: Planned Parenthood, probably Social Security, definitely our national parks, any chance of needed prison reform, labor unions, any chance of the slightest needed gun restriction, pollution controls. . .and of course, any chance to save the planet from climate change.
I am unable even to open a news source or look at social media. LJ is the only place I feel safe to look (I hope you'll excuse me if I don't click on any of your links).
The country has declared open war on POC, queer people, non-Christians, immigrants, and women, and half the people in this nation are either thrilled or are saying, well, I guess that's a reasonable price to pay (or more precisely, to force others to pay).
Words fail.
