Cast your mind back, to the dim and misty days of October 2001, just before The Sorceror's Stone was released in theatres, before the entire civilized world knew who Albus Dumbledore was, when the only pictures we had of Professor McGonagall and Severus Snape were those in our own heads (but still, alas, long after the first Harry Potter fanfic surfaced in the Pit of Voles). Into this anxious time of uncertainty and anticipation (will the kid who plays Harry be able to act? will he look like I imagined?) stepped Vanity Fair, with a photo feature called "Something About Harry" and the world's very first look at The Boy Who Lived (not to mention the Professor Who Made His Life Hell and Spawned a Thousand Fangirls, Me Included).

Travel back in time with me and see them...

Annie Leibovitz (she of the infamous John Lennon/Yoko Ono Rolling Stone photo), did the pictures and she set up some fantastic poses -- she made sure to work in glimpses of Hogwarts as backdrops, an extra bonus. I can't decide if the shot of the Gryffindor Quidditch Team lounging about the Common Room is my favorite, or the intriguing shot of Quirrel, Hooch and what looks like a pterodactyl skeleton (in the library, yet!).

I now REALLY want a copy of this issue of Vanity Fair.

You know what really gets me? Is that I had this issue, and it went the way of all flesh when I moved back to the US. Somethings just get lost in a move. *sigh* But I remember it well.

What I remember most is the Hubs coming home and saying, "Professor Snape is going to be played by Alan Rickman!" and me thinking, "Holy Shit - perfect casting!"

I still think it was inspired.

Oooh, what a stroll down memory lane. I want a copy too now! LOL! I liked the pic with the three Slytherins on one side and the Gryffs on the other, like one big happy family. :)

Wow, what a great post! Thanks for these links. I'd seen some of those photos before, but I hadn't realized that Leibovitz had done them. I think I'll have to go with the Hogwarts library pic as my favorite (Hooch's robes!), though of course Rickman looks great (I'm trying to remember my first sight of him as Snape, before the actor and the role became so connected in my mind.) And I love Minerva's pose, too.

I vividly remember going to see the film; I went to the midnight opening with several other professors from my school. We saw quite a few of our students there.

Would you mind if I posted this link to my flist?

(I wonder if that story really IS the first HP fanfic? I'm going to read it when I get the chance.)

I still have that issue. Mr. 42 always asks if I want to toss it, but I can't. I was so excited when that came out. I actually sewed myself a hat and dressed as Professor Sinistra. That was while I was reading but had not yet started to write fanfic (I started doing so in early 2002).

My favorite shot is definitely Hooch in that fabulous outfit with the pterodactyl.

Loved the Quidditch team too, lounging in the common room. (I bet those tapestries smell terrible after 1100 years. Hmm.) Why did I never appreciate Madam Hooch's costume before? SO COOL. She's a badass!

That's a dragon skeleton, you silly goose.

My favorite has to be the cupboard under the stairs - it's such a defining symbol of the series, and it represents what hooked me on the books in the first place - that she takes the house that Roald Dahl built and enriches his legacy so lovingly.

And Radcliffe is such a moppet in that shot - I just want so badly to give him a cookie and a hug to make it better.

Is that where that photo of Snape comes from! I've seen it used all over but never knew where the original could have come from, since it's unlike all the WB promos.
