How do I create an account?

Sometimes Dreamwidth requires prospective users to have an invite code to create a new account, and sometimes account creation is open to all without an invite code. This allows us to control site growth and not grow more quickly than we can support.

To create an account, visit the Create Your Dreamwidth Account page.

If an invite code is not required

If the Create Your Dreamwidth Account page doesn't ask you for an invite code, follow the steps on the page to create a free account.

If an invite code is required

If an invite code is required, the Create Your Dreamwidth Account page will ask you to enter an invite code before you can create a free account. You will need to either obtain an invite code, or purchase a paid or premium paid account. If invite codes are required, you can often find one in the dw_codesharing community.

Paid or Premium Paid accounts

Whether or not invite codes are enabled at the time you make an account, you can always make a payment to create a paid or premium paid account. If invite codes are enabled at the time you make an account, buying a paid or premium paid account bypasses the need for an invite code.

After you've finished the account creation process, you'll receive an email containing a link to confirm your email address. A confirmed email address is important in maintaining the security of your account.

If you are logged into another account when you create a new Dreamwidth account, you will be logged out of the first account and logged into the newly-created account.
